Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine

Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Les Cornets Noirs, Ensemble Delectus Cantionum (Vocal Ensemble)
It takes some confidence to dedicate a sacred work personally to the Pope. But Claudio Monteverdi was keen to reach as large an audience as possible when he published his »Vespro della Beata Vergine« in 1610. With the work, he sought to express all the facets of his compositional prowess, and the »Vespers for the Blessed Virgin« remains one of the greatest works of sacred music to this day. In 13 movements, Monteverdi demonstrates his mastery and his ability to integrate all the contrasting stylistic influences of his time into one diverse whole. The six-strong Flemish instrumental ensemble Les Cornets Noirs specialises in the music of Monteverdi’s time. Together with the singers of the Delectus Cantionum ensemble, they present a historically informed and musically expressive performance of this legendary work.

A special song recital with the Monteverdi Choir Hamburg, the young star soprano Katharina Ruckgaber and the Salzburg tenor Virgil Hartinger: In Franz Schubert’s incredibly large oeuvre, the choral work is still one of the unpolished jewels of the concert repertoire. The audience can expect heart-rending love songs and contemplations of nature full of longing as well as devotional sacred music. The programme is complemented by humorous piano songs by Joseph Haydn about everyday things, such as unwanted chatter at a wine evening and harmony in marriage.

What do the alpine horn and the organ have in common? / Torlontano / Di Lernia

Sun, Dec 8, 2024, 12:00
Carlo Torlontano (Alphorn), Francesco Di Lernia (Organ)
Although the organ is traditionally associated with sacred music and grand concerts, it can also be a fascinating complement to less typical chamber settings. The untypical combinations in this year’s organ concert series provide unique sounds and new, unexpected combinations. The result? We become more open to new interpretational possibilities and free experimenting. True to its "geographical" name, the alpine horn was often used in the Alps as a shepherd's instrument, its sound echoing through mountain valleys, serving both as a means of communication and in folk music. Hence the presence of such pieces as the traditional melody In den Alpen in the programme. This will be completed by the pastoral compositions by Leopold Mozart and Anton Zimmermann, Arcangelo Corelli’s baroque concerto arranged by Francesco Di Lernia, and contemporary compositions by Arvo Pärt and Giovanni D’Aquila. This diverse repertoire will take listeners on a journey across eras and musical styles, towards discoveries of new, surprising sounds. Alexandra KozowiczConcert duration: approximately 80 minutes

Monteverdi Choir / English Baroque Soloists / Peter Whelan

Tue, Mar 26, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists, Peter Whelan (Conductor)
The Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists present »Israel in Egypt«, one of George Frideric Handel’s most famous oratorios. The key protagonist is not a solo part, but the choir that represents the long-suffering Israelites. Luckily, the Monteverdi Choir is one of the best in the world – and an emotionally moving and musically formidable concert evening is in store. Next to his ubiquitous »Messiah«, Handel’s 24 other oratorios don’t have it easy, although »Israel in Egypt« is relatively well known. Which is no wonder considering how Handel packaged the story of the enslaved Israelites’ exodus from ancient Egypt as a musical crime drama. Although originally conceived for the concert hall, the oratorio is so full of drama that it is also regularly performed on the operatic stage.

Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg / Sabine Rein / Antonius Adamske

Fri, Jun 14, 2024, 19:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg, Sabine Rein (Recitation), Antonius Adamske (Conductor)
In this programme, the renowned Monteverdi Choir Hamburg presents songs by Robert Schumann. The a cappella programme is combined with texts by poets associated with Schumann, such as Robert Burns. Robert Schumann’s music is often very serious and an expression of his melancholy. This can also be heard in his choral compositions, but there is also a good dose of humour, such as in the choral compositions »Schön Rohtraut« and »Zahnweh«. The songs in this programme invite you to reflect and smile in equal measure. Sabine Rein recites suitable excerpts from letters or other testimonies from Schumann’s life. These are accompanied by testimonies from the poets whose verses he set to music.
