Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg / Sabine Rein / Antonius Adamske

Fri, Jun 14, 2024, 19:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg, Sabine Rein (Recitation), Antonius Adamske (Conductor)
In this programme, the renowned Monteverdi Choir Hamburg presents songs by Robert Schumann. The a cappella programme is combined with texts by poets associated with Schumann, such as Robert Burns. Robert Schumann’s music is often very serious and an expression of his melancholy. This can also be heard in his choral compositions, but there is also a good dose of humour, such as in the choral compositions »Schön Rohtraut« and »Zahnweh«. The songs in this programme invite you to reflect and smile in equal measure. Sabine Rein recites suitable excerpts from letters or other testimonies from Schumann’s life. These are accompanied by testimonies from the poets whose verses he set to music.

The Franz Schubert Choir’s Christmas concert this year combines two masterpieces of choral music: the »Saint Nicolas Cantata« by Benjamin Britten and the »Oratorio de Noël« by Camille Saint-Saëns. Britten’s St Nicholas Cantata is characterised by rich harmonies, lively text painting and dramatic narration. It combines the sacred with the profane and takes the audience on a journey that traces the life and legacy of St Nicholas, the patron saint of children. Saint-Saëns makes the Christmas story resound radiantly and solemnly in his »Oratorio de Noël«. The musical beauty and sonorous interpretation of the text make this Christmas oratorio unmistakable and an important work of Romantic music. Under the direction of Christiane Hrasky, the Franz-Schubert-Chor Hamburg, outstanding soloists and the Hamburg Camerata will present the two pieces to the audience.

Bam! – »Oooooo Fortuuuna!« – Boom! That’s how the »Carmina Burana« begins. These are the »Songs from Beuern«, song texts from a medieval manuscript that was discovered in 1803 in the Benediktbeuern monastery. They contain cheerful, humorous, but also coarse texts: Monks take out good German citizens in a game of dice, there is drinking, feasting, banter and ... making love. Strong stuff, then. But the aforementioned Fortuna – fate – played these very texts into Carl Orff’s hands in 1934 when he discovered an edition of them by chance in a second-hand bookshop – and was immediately electrified. Orff was inspired by the medieval aura of the »Carmina« and found ways to evoke the feeling of the Middle Ages. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine

Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Les Cornets Noirs, Ensemble Delectus Cantionum (Vocal Ensemble)
It takes some confidence to dedicate a sacred work personally to the Pope. But Claudio Monteverdi was keen to reach as large an audience as possible when he published his »Vespro della Beata Vergine« in 1610. With the work, he sought to express all the facets of his compositional prowess, and the »Vespers for the Blessed Virgin« remains one of the greatest works of sacred music to this day. In 13 movements, Monteverdi demonstrates his mastery and his ability to integrate all the contrasting stylistic influences of his time into one diverse whole. The six-strong Flemish instrumental ensemble Les Cornets Noirs specialises in the music of Monteverdi’s time. Together with the singers of the Delectus Cantionum ensemble, they present a historically informed and musically expressive performance of this legendary work.
