Júlio Resende Fado Jazz Ensemble

Wed, May 1, 2024, 20:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Júlio Resende Fado Jazz Ensemble, Júlio Resende (Piano), Bruno Chaveiro (Portuguese guitar), André Rosinha (Bass), Alexandre Frazão (Drums)
Júlio Resende is a jazz pianist, but he also loves the beautiful, melancholic sounds of fado. So he created his very own genre: »fado jazz«. He is admired in the homeland of fado and further afield for »his profound ability to reinvent Portugal’s trademark, deep, emotional music on the piano« (Songlines). With his well-attuned quartet – in which it is predominantly the small, lute-like guitarra portuguesa that produces the classic fado timbre – Resende now presents his latest album »Sons of Revolution«. Júlio Resende has dedicated the album to Portugal’s Carnation Revolution. The peaceful putsch of 1974 brought António de Oliveira Salazar’s regime – a 40-year dictatorship – to an end. Not only did the revolution pave the way for democracy in Portugal, it also ended Portuguese colonial rule in Mozambique and Angola. »Without the Carnation Revolution, I wouldn’t be here,« says Resende. »After the revolution, my father emigrated from Angola to Portugal, where he got to know my mother. It means a lot to me to have the freedom to express what I think and feel. And that is also what’s most important in jazz: the only constant in this music is the idea of freedom.« With that in mind, Resende composed wonderfully powerful melodies for »Sons of Revolution« – melodies that combine an optimistic mood, the spirit of fado and the independence of jazz.

Maria Baptist

Sun, Mar 9, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Maria Baptist (Piano), Maria Baptist (Composition)
»Maria Baptist’s rhapsodic, free-flowing piano style is reminiscent of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett,« writes the renowned Downbeat Magazine, naming the pianist and composer in the same breath as two of the great jazz pianists of our time. The recordings for the new album were made during her debut at the Elbphilharmonie. Maria Baptist’s piano solo cycle interweaves the grand dramaturgy of symphonic works with her profound improvisations to create a new sound experience. Between her powerful virtuosity, subtle polyphony in the spirit of Bach and her boundless lyricism, Maria Baptist’s music reveals an attitude to life of freedom and courage and thus becomes a message to be guided by hopes rather than fears.

Jazz & Lyrics: Synaesthesia and jazz

Sat, Feb 15, 2025, 20:00
Hearing colours, tasting sounds: This evening focuses on artists whose sensory perceptions function differently to those of most people and who were able to draw enormous creative potential from this. The musicians around Rüdiger Ruppert and Sebastian Krol certainly don't just look at Johann Wolfgang Goethe or Stevie Wonder. **** “Since jazz is one of the most intriguing languages out there, it’s natural to want to combine it with texts and poetry.” In its new series of jazz events in the Tischlerei the Big Band of the Deutsche Oper Berlin presents six themed concerts featuring smaller formations of the Big Band and guests. The concerts focus on a particular subject or composer, amalgamating music and poetry. Texts, biographical information, poetry and background information on the evening’s unifying theme combine to produce a unique experience for the audience.

Kind of Jazz I – Chamber Jazz

Wed, Jan 29, 2025, 19:30
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Warren Vaché (Cornett), Jan Lundgren (Piano), Jacob Fischer (Guitar), Thomas Fonnesbæk (Double bass)
Jan Lundgren is one of our foremost musicians, and with around fifty CDs and a range of projects and collaborations, he has consistently shown his ability to embrace tradition while always evolving. Each year, Jan Lundgren presents three concerts under the banner Kind of Jazz – unique meetings with invited artists and ensembles. Kind of Jazz 2025 marks the series’ seventh season.“The title Chamber Jazz signals an intimate way of making music together, and this time there will be no drums,” says Jan Lundgren. “For the first time, I’ll be working with American cornetist Warren Vaché, who is considered one of the greats today and one of the few still active who has played with legends like Benny Goodman. Warren’s roots are in the swing era of the 1940s, with early influences such as Roy Eldridge and Bobby Hackett. The Great American Songbook will be central, and we’ll definitely include something by Duke Ellington.”Joining Jan Lundgren and Warren Vaché are two of Denmark’s finest jazz musicians: guitarist Jacob Fischer – “we’ve played together in many settings since the 1990s; he’s a true musician’s musician,” and bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk, “arguably Denmark’s top bassist and a successor to the great Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.”Note: The cornet is similar to the trumpet but is slightly more compact and has a warmer sound.
