Paul Lewis and the BRSO had actually planned to make up for Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in these concerts, which was canceled due to the pandemic. Due to a vertebral injury, the British pianist is now playing Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto – instead of the young Norwegian’s unabashedly romantic piece, a work that opens the door to the Romantic era. And it would be hard to find a better interpreter than the proven Beethoven specialist Paul Lewis. In conductor Manfred Honeck’s conception, Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet will be brought to life with a more expressive, or, to be precise, more Dadaist character: rhythmically concise, ecstatically pulsating – a playful new territory for the BRSO musicians. And, indeed, every concert that includes the Eroica is bound to be one of the highlights of an orchestral season.

Franz Schubert held the torch at Ludwig van Beethoven's funeral. It was a symbolic moment – the younger composer was taking over the Promethean flame from a genius. Despite the pathos, it is an accurate association when comparing their symphonies or quartets. However, Schubert did not take over the flame for long – he died less than two years later. In the last months of his life, he created a series of masterpieces, among them three piano sonatas. After their publication, they were heavily criticised for departing from Beethovenian patterns. However, inspiration does not mean imitation after all! Schubert's style is gentle and less definite. Every play is lined with melancholy; contemplation borders on the sublime and ecstasy. Very few people can portray the entire universe of these three sisters' works as aptly as Paul Lewis. It has to be experienced. Adam Suprynowicz Concert duration: approximately 140 minutes

His symphonies, including the Third, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh, convey this through themes of life, liberation, nature, religion, time, and rhythm. He felt his Seventh Symphony needed no explanation, although the true meaning remains a mystery. Brahms, similarly, uses irony and understatement to describe his Second Piano Concerto, acknowledging the difficulty of capturing music's essence in words.

Manfred Honeck, who has been chief conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for more than 15 years, still returns to conduct the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra each year. After presenting the sensational programme »Mozart and Death in Words and Music« last season, this year’s programme is all about love after death. In Greek mythology, the heroes who were particularly beloved by the gods found eternal peace on the »Isles of the Blessed«: Elysium. The Berlin-based Canadian composer Samy Moussa has dedicated a musical work to this paradise. It was premiered in Barcelona in 2021 and subsequently given its first German performance by Manfred Honeck. The musical depiction of the eagerly desired reward for all earthly toil is now also being performed at the Elbphilharmonie. It’s no coincidence that Honeck has chosen to programme Moussa’s work, which was certainly inspired by Anton Bruckner’s expansive style, just before the latter’s Ninth Symphony. Moussa’s piece thereby functions, in a way, as a prologuing fourth movement to the deeply religious composer’s »Unfinished« Symphony – as a forecast of where everything could, in the end, lead. »And now I dedicate my last work to the majesty of all the majesties, the beloved God, and hope that he will give me so much time to complete the same,« Bruckner allegedly said during work on his monumental Symphony in D Minor – although this wish was ultimately not granted. He died while working on drafts for the finale.But even without this closing movement, the symphony bears all the features of an »opus ultimum«, a summary of all that constitutes Bruckner’s tonal language. The suspenseful opening phase, for example, that is a feature of every single one of his symphonies, is carried to extremes here with an extra-long preparation phase. Nowhere do things get as wild as in the Scherzo of the Ninth, and nowhere does the listener feel that Elysium is closer than in the magnificent Adagio, which fades away with reminiscences of previous Bruckner symphonies.
