LPO at Saffron Hall

Sun, Apr 6, 2025, 15:30
Vladimir Jurowski (Conductor), Vilde Frang (Violin)
Not for nothing is Schubert’s expansive final symphony known as ‘The Great’ – it is music of broad vistas, lofty ambition, but also a sparkling vivacity and seamlessly stitched, intricate detail.LPO Conductor Emeritus Vladamir Jurowski brings a depth of insight and imagination to this totemic work, and to the arresting drama of Beethoven’s work. He and violinist Vilde Frang are a perfectly attuned pairing to bring out the poetry and eloquence of Schumann’s concerto. Frang is making waves. A deeply expressive communicator with a luminous sound, and astonishing technical facility, she is an ever-thoughtful interpreter.

A surprisingly different Beethoven enters into a dialogue with a composer who finds the music of the present in historical material, peeling it apart and digging it up, like a forward-looking archaeologist. In the second part of the Isabel Mundry showcase, the Ensemble Resonanz presents the final version of her piece Signaturen, based on the last bar of a Mozart sonata, before Riccardo Minasi conducts the ensemble through an unheard interpretation of Beethoven’s “Eroica”.

LPO at Saffron Hall, 30 Nov

Sat, Nov 30, 2024, 19:30
Tianyi Lu (Conductor), Zlatomir Fung (Cello)
Perhaps the world’s most enduringly popular classical ballet, Swan Lake is a classic fairytale of a lovelorn Prince, an evil sorcerer and a spell that can only be broken by true love.It inspired some of Tchaikovsky’s most sumptuous music, impassioned, delicate and brilliantly coloured. The Variations on a Rococo Theme (on a mock-baroque theme by the composer himself) pay homage to suave eighteenth-century style in a charming, lyrical slice of eighteenth century elegance. More myth and legend shape our curtain-raiser, as the magic of Oberon, King of the Fairies, and his enchanted forest kingdom is perfectly captured by the overture to Weber’s opera.
