A sacred Everyman, so to speak, and an unusual story for an oratorio full of moving choral moments. Why Edward Elgar himself gave this composition the highest priority in his work to date and why... SING-ALONG CONCERT with the CHOIR OF THE BAYERISCHE RUNDFUNK

Sun, Nov 17, 2024, 17:30
Konzerthalle Bamberg, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal (Bamberg)
Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Chorus), Howard Arman (Conductor)
Sir Yehudi Menuhin once said about the power of vocal music: »In singing, we humans are creative and creative beings of sound. We have the ability to animate our world and our actions through singing, to give love, joy, hope and confidence, but also to sing the pain from our souls.« Last season, we experienced how much our audience loves to take part in a concert and to sing surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd – and we also love such enthusiastic and spine-tingling events. That’s why, after the great success of the sing-along concert, there is now a sequel, turning listeners into performers. Regardless of whether you already sing in an ensemble or just like to sing alone in the shower: we are again offering the stage for concentrated vocal power, a strong feeling of togetherness and lots of moments of happiness. Everyone is cordially invited to join in a huge choir of over 1,000 people and sing selected numbers from Handel’s popular oratorio »Messiah« at the top of their voices as well as wonderful Christmas songs in preparation for the festive season. They will be superbly supported by popular Bamberg-based professionals from the Bavarian Radio Choir and, of course, by our orchestral musicians – and Howard Arman will once again provide the musical finishing touches with his likeable style of witty and humorous announcements. It is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience with lots of fun, a catchy tune or two and balm for the soul – after all, Friedrich Schiller wrote the famous line in his poem about the »power of song«: »Every sorrow’s wrinkles disappear as long as the magic of song prevails.«

The Giants of the Baroque in London

Sat, Jan 18, 2025, 15:00
Concerto Copenhagen, Lars Ulrik Mortensen (Conductor), Lars Ulrik Mortensen (Harpsichordist), Fredrik From (Violin)
The Danish baroque specialists Concerto Copenhagen presents a programme centered around Händel and Roman. When the young Swedish violinist and composer Johan Helmich Roman embarked on a study trip to London in 1716, it would prove to be a journey that was decisive, not only for Roman’s life but for the entire history of Swedish music.Roman came from the German-dominated music scene in Stockholm to London where the dominant musical trend was the Italian style, embodied in the recently arrived Georg Friedrich Händel. Roman was an active part of London’s musical life. He played in Händel’s orchestra at the King’s Theatre and met other musicians and composers, many of them from Italy. So, when Roman returned to Stockholm in 1721, he did so as a well-educated, modern-oriented musician and a brilliant violinist. Most importantly, as a composer, he had acquired a thorough understanding of new stylistic trends, not only in opera but also in instrumental music. Roman remained associated with the Swedish court orchestra throughout his life, and his stay in London not only affected ”the father of Swedish music,” as Roman is known today, but also changed the history of Swedish music. This program presents the music that ”the Swedish Händel,” Johan Helmich Roman, encountered in London, as well as the music he composed himself.
