Karl Bartos: »The Cabinet of Dr Caligari«

Wed, Jun 5, 2024, 19:30
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Karl Bartos (Music), Karl Bartos (Electronics), Karl Bartos (Sound design), Mathias Black (Sound), Mathias Black (Technical director)
Two legendary worlds collide: the creativity of a long-time Kraftwerk band member and a milestone in cinema history. It is no exaggeration to use the adjective »sensational« to describe what has been created in recent years in the Hamburg studio of musician Karl Bartos, who played a key role in shaping Kraftwerk’s electropop style from 1974 to 1990. It brings the silent film classic »The Cabinet of Dr Caligari« into our time through sophisticated sound design and creates a total work of art that immediately casts a spell over you. The fascinating interplay of fantasy and touching chills is given something intoxicating and beguilingly beautiful by Barto’s sound art. Karl Bartos has been fascinated by »The Cabinet of Dr Caligari« for almost twenty years and has given this silent film classic a fitting artistic guise. He has not only created a completely new, consistent soundscape to accompany the movie, but also his own music. He uses the timeless sound of the symphony orchestra, albeit synthesised and electronically modulated. This spectacular project combines the film screening of the first psycho-thriller with sounds and music created live on stage by Karl Bartos and his colleague Mathias Black.

30 Years of Mnozil Brass

Fri, Apr 12, 2024, 13:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Thomas Gansch (Trumpet), Thomas Gansch (Flugelhorn), Robert Rother (Trumpet), Robert Rother (Flugelhorn), Roman Rindberger (Trumpet), Roman Rindberger (Flugelhorn), Gerhard Füssl (Trumpet), Leonhard Paul (Trombone), Leonhard Paul (Bass trumpet), Zoltán Kiss (Tenor trombone), Zoltán Kiss (Alto trombone), Wilfried Brandstötter (F-tuba)
It is now 30 years since a few cheeky music students with the ambition of a career as orchestral musicians gave in to the temptations of pub music at the Mnozil Inn in Vienna and thus made their unplanned way into the entertainment business. They left the noble world of classical music behind them and travelled the globe with brass show tunes and hits. Success came quickly and the inevitable happened: the decades flew by and students eventually became professors themselves. But the fire of blown music never goes out! It still burns brightly in their hearts in 2023, just like back then, in the small Viennese pub. And that’s why Mnozil Brass is once again setting out for new shores and presenting the ultimate brass birthday in the form of an anniversary show: »Jubelei! – 30 Years of Mnozil Brass. Happy Birthday to Us!«
