Daniel Sepec has made a specialty of rarely heard Baroque violin repertoire—including Biber’s “Mystery” Sonatas, which he performed to great acclaim at the Pierre Boulez Saal last season. He now returns with another veritable discovery: joined by his longtime musical partners Hille Perl, Lee Santana, and Michael Behringer, Sepec presents violin sonatas by the almost entirely forgotten Italian composer Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli, written in 1660 while he served as court musician in Innsbruck. The program also includes works by his contemporaries Kapsberger, Bonnizzi, Schmelzer, and Biber.

After their acclaimed performances of "Theodora" and "Dido and Aeneas", they now present Gesualdo's "Sacrae Cantiones". Known for his secular madrigals, Gesualdo's sacred songs are equally unique, expressing his eccentric personality and troubled marriage through unusual harmonies and intense emotion. Although today Antonio Vivaldi is best known for the Four Seasons, in the 18th century, the collection L'estro armonico became famous as one of the most influential instrumental pieces of music of the time. Published in 1711, the series of 12 concertos met with great acclaim, and the composer immediately became a significant figure on the international scene. The very accurate title also shows that the composer was aware of the momentous nature of the work. Undoubtedly, we are dealing with Vivaldi's brilliant vision. This is Vivaldi at his best: lively and brilliant, reaching for extended cantilenas, written with a wonderful sense of pure joy of music-making, spontaneity, a sense of mutual fun and ensemble play. When properly interpreted, the relentless and growing energy of these concertos is reminiscent of the morning sun wandering across a room – and this is precisely the kind of interpretation we can expect from Il Giardino Armonico and Isabelle Faust as soloist. When Igor Levit takes his seat at the keyboard, one thing is for sure: you’ll hear the pieces on the programme as never before. The German-Russian pianist makes his very own mark, often as unexpected as it is brilliant, on every work he plays, whisking even veteran repertoire warhorses into the here and now. In this concert Levit is accompanied by the Berliner Barock Solisten in music by two composers who can be described without exaggeration as pinnacles of music history: Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The most famous of the Bach sons made a no less illustrious career for himself than his father, and was admired by fellow composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. In this cleverly thought-out programme, Levit and the Berlin ensemble create a father-son dialogue along entirely modern lines.
