Chamber Orchestra of Europe / Iestyn Davies / Robin Ticciati

Wed, Jan 29, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Iestyn Davies (Countertenor), Robin Ticciati (Conductor)
»The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is all about the music. In concert, this magical group unleashes an unbridled, emotional fervour, underpinned by profound wisdom. It is a privilege to work with this orchestra,« conductor Robin Ticciati raves about the democratically organised orchestra, with which he has been a regular guest at the Elbphilharmonie for almost ten years now. This orchestra-conductor dream team is now building on its celebrated 2019 Mozart project, and has invited Grammy Award-winning countertenor Iestyn Davies to conjure up magical moments in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall with arias by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and George Frideric Handel. The concert comes to an end with Mozart’s »Haffner« Symphony, whose lively finale includes melodies from the opera »Die Entführung aus dem Serail«, composed in the same year.

Robin Ticciati (Conductor), Joélle Harvey (Soprano), Karen Cargill (Mezzo-Soprano), Rundfunkchor Berlin (Choir), Gerhard Polifka (Chorus Master), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
»Noise, scandal, mischief, subversion!« the press railed in 1895 about the Berlin premiere of Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony. Some 120 years later, the original score of the ›Resurrection Symphony‹ sold at auction at Sotheby’s for EUR 5.3 million. Back then, it was conducted in Berlin by the composer himself. Now Robin Ticciati will bid his adieu as DSO Music Director with this revolutionary work, which surpasses all the usual dimensions and today is one of Mahler’s most popular symphonies.

Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Sunwook Kim

Mon, Mar 24, 2025, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Chamber Orchestra of Europe (Orchestra), Sunwook Kim (Piano), Sunwook Kim (Director)
The pianist Sunwook Kim has been acclaimed for his sensitivity, brilliance and stylistic confidence – all qualities well-suited to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, whose Piano Concertos No. 3 and No. 4 he performs with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. While the Third is tragic, serious and combative, the Fourth is lyrical, impetuous and playful. Two works by contemporary British composers will also be performed: Anna Clyne's string work Stride, which is inspired by Beethoven's music, and Helen Grime's Elegiac inflections, which demonstrates the diverse sonic possibilities of a wind ensemble.

Anton Bruckner would have turned 200 years old on 4 September 2024 – an occasion for the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra to focus on important works by the great composer and organist throughout the season. On this evening in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall, the audience can immerse itself in the various facets of his work and influence: Bruckner’s Seventh, perhaps his most popular symphony, meets lesser-known sacred music by the former organist of St Florian’s Abbey and Linz Cathedral.

Chamber Orchestra of Europe / Sir András Schiff

Tue, May 28, 2024, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Olivier Stankiewicz (Oboe), Rie Koyama (Bassoon), Lorenza Borrani (Violin), Richard Lester (Cello), Sir András Schiff (Piano), Sir András Schiff (Director)
»There are orchestras, good ones, great ones, and then there is the Chamber Orchestra of Europe«, said Sir András Schiff once. The pianist first got to know the orchestra in 1985. And over the course of their many concerts together, Schiff discovered a passion for conducting. From the piano, he now conducts a classical and Romantic programme in which Joseph Haydn meets his admirer Johannes Brahms. From Haydn the Viennese classicist we have the Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, bassoon, violin, violoncello and orchestra, a piece that was enthusiastically received at its London premiere in 1792. With his orchestral variations on a small (choral) theme from a Haydn divertimento, Brahms wrote his first great orchestral work in 1873, after sketches for a symphony had been incorporated into his first piano concerto in the 1850s. The work, which Sir András Schiff has repeatedly reinterpreted throughout his career, sounds correspondingly symphonic. With all these great pieces, Schiff and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe celebrate almost 40 years of musical friendship!

The Wedding of the Sun King

Fri, Jan 17, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Le Poème Harmonique (Choir), Le Poème Harmonique (Orchestra), Ana Quintans (Soprano), Isabelle Druet (Mezzo-Soprano), Paco Garcia (Tenor), Serge Goubioud (Tenor), Viktor Shapovalov (Bariton), Vincent Dumestre (Theorbo), Vincent Dumestre (Director)
Probably France’s largest 17th century festival comes to life again here: the wedding between the »Sun King« Louis XIV and the Spanish princess Marie-Thérèse ended the long-standing hostility of both countries in 1660 and was fittingly ostentatiously celebrated, firstly on the Spanish border, then in Paris. Thereby, a large-scale musical setting befitting their social status from sacred works via fanfares to dance and opera should also be included. Vincent Dumestre, with his period performance orchestra Le Poème Harmonique and vocalists, has put together a splendid panorama of French baroque music, which transforms the entire Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall into a royal ballroom. The proverbial timpani and trumpets sound, there is a lot of music by Jean-Baptiste Lully – Louis XIV’s favourite composer – and by Francesco Cavalli, who travelled from Italy to Paris for the wedding specifically for performances of his operas. This programme incidentally evolved from Dumestre and his ensembles for the Palace of Versailles, which the Sun King had built as an overflowing, sumptuous structure – also to make space for the theatre, ballet and opera performances he so loved. Today, the stars of the early music scene take golden hammers into their hands here and sound repertoire gems of the 16th to 18th century.
