Quiet, shy, introverted: Daniil Trifonov often seems to be from another world. And perhaps he reveals this world in every one of his concerts. Because when the native Russian now living in New York sits down at the piano, an incomparable magic unfolds, eliciting sounds and feelings from his instrument that seem to defy rational explanation. It is fitting that he plays Robert Schumann’s highly romantic piano concerto in this ProArte concert. With Hector Berlioz’ intoxicating Symphonie fantastique, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal presents the instrumental counterpart to Schumann’s introverted soundscapes in the second half of the concert.

When Igor Levit takes his seat at the keyboard, one thing is for sure: you’ll hear the pieces on the programme as never before. The German-Russian pianist makes his very own mark, often as unexpected as it is brilliant, on every work he plays, whisking even veteran repertoire warhorses into the here and now. In this concert Levit is accompanied by the Berliner Barock Solisten in music by two composers who can be described without exaggeration as pinnacles of music history: Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The most famous of the Bach sons made a no less illustrious career for himself than his father, and was admired by fellow composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. In this cleverly thought-out programme, Levit and the Berlin ensemble create a father-son dialogue along entirely modern lines.

Elegance, virtuosity, delicacy – all this can be discovered in an endlessly inventive world of musical expression. In a programme with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and conductor Robin Ticciati, you can experience some of Handel’s most beautiful arias and orchestral pieces from operas and other works. Iestyn Davies, one of the leading countertenors of our time, is the soloist. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a great admirer of Handel. His festive and exuberant “Haffner Symphony” concludes the programme.

»HINWEIS:Der japanische Bach-Spezialist Masaaki Suzuki hat die Leitung des Konzerts dankenswerterweise kurzfristig für den erkrankten französischen Dirigenten Raphaël Pichon übernommen. Das Programm bleibt unverändert.»Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott.« Wer dabei nur an Bach denkt, hat nicht mit Felix Mendelssohn gerechnet. Denn dieser Luther-Choral ist auch in dessen 5. Sinfonie prominent vertreten, die Reformations-Hymne ist geradezu der Schlüssel zum Werk. Und den wird hier nun nicht wie geplant ein Franzose, sondern ein Japaner in Händen halten – neben den für die Werke Bachs. Masaaki Suzuki ist Gründer und Musikalischer Leiter des Bach Collegium Japan und hat sich seit dessen Gründung im Jahr 1990 weltweit als eine Autorität in Sachen Bach etabliert. Bis heute führt er sein Collegium zu den wichtigsten Konzertsälen und Festivals in Europa und den USA. Zusätzlich zu seiner Arbeit mit Ensembles historisch orientierter Aufführungspraxis wie dem Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment und Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra dirigiert er als Gast aber auch Orchester mit modernen Instrumenten und einem breiten Repertoire von Brahms, Britten, Fauré, Mahler, Mendelssohn und Strawinsky. Suzukis Diskografie enthält Bachs große Chorwerke sowie sein komplettes Werk für Cembalo, teils ausgezeichnet mit dem Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, einem Diapason d’Or de l’Année 2010 sowie einem BBC Music Magazine Award 2011. 2014 schloss er die Aufnahmen von Bachs vollständigen Kirchenkantaten mit dem Bach Collegium Japan ab, die 1995 begonnen wurde und 65 CDs enthält.Konzertdauer: ca. 105 Minuten – inklusive Pause
