Florian Christl & Ensemble

Tue, Apr 9, 2024, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Florian Christl (Piano), Florian Christl (Composition), Clara Büsel (Violin), Leandro Hauxwell (Violin), Alona Khlevna (Viola), Gereon Theis (Cello), Benedikt Wagner (Cello), Nikolaus Franz (Double bass)
Florian Christl, his piano and an ensemble of strings are the ingredients for an intense concert evening of a special kind. The programme consists solely of pieces that the Munich-based pianist and composer has written himself. Some of these have already been released on CD, while others are new to the public. Composing is a personal, almost intimate process for Florian Christl, a process where he is alone with his music. Improvisation plays an important role: there are moments where Christl, as he says himself, escapes reality to feel alive, absorbed in his own thoughts. The result is a mixture of thrilling drama and lyrical contemplation combined with moving strings arrangements.

Florian Heinisch (Piano)
With this recital, Hamburg pianist Florian Heinisch returns to the Elbphilharmonie once again after acclaimed concerts in 2019 and 2023. The programme is a tribute to the enormous stylistic diversity that has made the musical city of Hamburg a unique force in the world of classical music to this day. »I may have been born in Liverpool, but I grew up in Hamburg« – this statement by John Lennon about his beginnings with the Beatles in the Hanseatic city also fits many biographies and careers in classical music.

Peter Sloterdijk & Florian Boesch in Conversation

Sat, Mar 16, 2024, 18:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Peter Sloterdijk (Talk), Florian Boesch (Talk), Justus Zeyen (Piano)
»Foreign is the foreigner only in a foreign land« – André Heller is using these words from a half-Dadaistic, half-philosophical text by the comedian and author Karl Valentin as the theme for his Reflektor festival. And with the lines »A stranger I arrived here, a stranger I go hence« begins perhaps the best-known song cycle of the romantic period: the »Winterreise« by Franz Schubert. At the start of André Heller’s »Reflektor«, the contemporary philosopher Peter Sloterdijk meets with the baritone Florian Boesch to talk about the sense of alienation emanating from the »Winterreise«. Florian Boesch, whom you can otherwise also experience in major opera and oratorio parts, has a particular passion for lieder. And the »Winterreise« with its lonesome wanderer on a futile journey through darkness and cold particularly attracted him: he has already recorded it twice and interpreted it countless times in concert – even theatrically. »The Winterreise is simply magnificent. The snowy landscape is its soul, its spirituality.« Peter Sloterdijk is one of the most important contemporary German philosophers and is internationally considered as a great thinker. This eloquent prolific writer is a popular voice in all great contemporary debates, from current political issues and climate change to feminism. His »Critique of Cynical Reason« is one of the best-selling philosophical books of the 20th century. Please note: This event takes place in German.

Now, five years after the release of the first CD "Front & Center," Ross and the WDR Big Band reunite for "Plans & Drawers." This time, Ross revisits previously unreleased material, plans that had been confined to his drawers.
