Enemy: Kit Downes / Petter Eldh / James Maddren

Date & Time
Wed, Apr 24, 2024, 20:00
They’re interested in extreme rhythms, but they’re also into lyrical exactitude, intensity, eruptive outbursts and harsh contrasts. The band Enemy takes the piano trio subgenre and really pushes it against the grain. If bands like Bad Plus or Phronesis are your thing, this evening is one not to be missed. The British Enemy pianist Kit Downes is no stranger to the Elbphilharmonie, having already given an acclaimed solo concert here on the organ. Musically speaking his oeuvre is extremely broad,... NDR Bigband, Darcy James Argue (Composition), Darcy James Argue (Conductor)
High voltage. The complete package: rhythmically, harmonically, sonically. The collaboration between the NDR Bigband and composer Darcy James Argue promises serious fun. An awareness of tradition is paired with the open horizon of the internet age and the desire to wildly combine and re-contextualise.

James Gaffigan

Sat, Nov 5, 2022, 19:00
James Gaffigan (Conductor), Ramón Ortega Quero (Oboe), Mor Biron (Bassoon), Radoslaw Szulc (Violin), Giorgi Kharadze (Cello), Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
“My Fifth Symphony is an accursed creation. No one understands it.” Only after Mahler’s death did the initial incomprehension change to admiration for this forward-looking piece. Yearning for death and affirmation of life, Weltschmerz and fulfilment, sorrow and joy: all lie side-by-side in this symphony, as so often in Mahler. It opens with a funeral march, its centre is a Ländler followed by a musical declaration of love, and it ends in an apotheosis. James Gaffigan precedes Mahler’s trailblazing sonic universe with Haydn’s Sinfonia concertante, a work no less modern for its own era. By having four solo instruments (oboe, bassoon, violin and cello) stand out from the orchestral tutti, Haydn situates the piece between an instrumental concerto and a symphony – a welcome task for soloists from the ranks of the orchestra.

James' Choice

Thu, Oct 31, 2024, 20:00
Konzerthaus Berlin, Großer Saal (Berlin)
Evamaria Salcher (Speaker)
Weiterlesen Weniger anzeigen

It goes without saying that The Concertgebouw and jazz & pop music make a perfect combination. Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald have both performed here, as have Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. Famous pop stars and bands that have graced the stage of the Main Hall include Frank Zappa, the Doors and the Eagles, to name but a few. Legendary concerts, in the present as well as the past.

Bertrand de Billy, Kit Armstrong

Sat, Feb 15, 2025, 20:00
Konzerthalle Bamberg, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal (Bamberg)
Bertrand de Billy (Conductor), Kit Armstrong (Piano)
How is the house built? When are the roof, walls and floors added? And will the structure be able to support itself? These are the questions of an architect – but they can also be the questions of conductors when they approach musical structures with their very own style and passion. It is therefore hardly surprising that Bertrand de Billy, who was already fantasising about becoming a conductor at the age of four, once said: »If it hadn’t worked out with music, I would probably have been an architect.« From an early age, he carefully observed the movements of conductors – whether from the choirboy's perspective or as an orchestral musician. Today, he conducts numerous renowned orchestras himself. His specialities include classics and key works of the 20th century and, as a native of Paris, time and again declarations of love for French music. With us, he combines Gershwin and Ravel, two composers who knew each other well and both absorbed the other’s idiom. Ravel’s dazzling piece »Daphnis et Chloé« is a fairytale story about two foundlings, which premiered in the French metropolis in 1912. Gershwin’s pulsating piano concerto also has something to do with the city of love: although it was composed in 1925 in the jazzy melting pot that is New York, large parts of it were later woven into the film »An American in Paris«. As a congenial sound designer, Bertrand de Billy will work with us and the pianist Kit Armstrong to delicately emphasise the different currents and similarities of the compositions like a musical architect: Because he never wants to be an overbearing chef d'orchestre, but simply to be an artist among artists: »The fulfilment of creating something together is indescribably beautiful.«

JazzKLUB / Insane Imagination / James Brandon Lewis’ Red Lily Quintet

Tue, Nov 26, 2024, 19:30
James Brandon Lewis (Tenor Saxophone), Kirk Knuffke, Tomeka Reid (Cello), Silvia Bolognesi (Double bass), Lily Finnegan (Drums)
The 40-year-old saxophonist’s music is a bridge between the religious tradition of the Black South, the heritage of wonderful jazz tenors, and the fire of free jazz. It is not so much located in the borderlands of jazz classics and the so-called avant garde, as it is above the division, ever more artificial these days. The leader of the Red Lily Quintet managed to bring together musicians who think similarly to him, the very best in the generation of great synthesis. Lewis’ skills as a saxophonist go through the roof and his imagination is insane – this much is well known. He is also characterised by charisma and a specific type of fervour that is sometimes described as “soulful”, “emotional” and “deep”, but none of the words alone could ever summarise the attitude. To see James Brandon Lewis playing live is an experience like none other. Tomasz Gregorczyk Concert duration: approximately 90 minutes
