Date & Time
Sun, Apr 21, 2024, 20:00
»Art is not just beauty, art should move people as well,« says Diana Damrau. There can be no doubt that she does this to excellent effect: for years now, the celebrated soprano has been filling opera houses and concert halls all over the world with her radiant voice and a peerless intensity of expression. Yet the appealing Bavarian singer has no airs and graces, nor does she think in terms of musical pigeonholes. Good-humoured and completely authentic, she sings opera... Read full text

Dirk Maassen is one of the most successful German neoclassical composers. He is internationally acclaimed for his moving, gentle and stylistically unique soundscapes. Over one million streams per month speak for themselves. But Dirk Maassen also and above all inspires his audience every time he performs live. With unique feeling and impressive timing, he performs his works, which seem to magically reach the subconscious and open doors there that previously remained undiscovered.

After five albums under contract with Sony Classical, this album was conceived and recorded entirely on his own. The pieces on the album paint emotions and stories associated with creation and origins. Maassen demonstrates his characteristic talent for interweaving complex piano melodies and cinematic atmospheres.

Ein Liederabend mit Diana Damrau und Jonas Kaufmann

Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 19:00
Diana Damrau (Soprano), Jonas Kaufmann (Tenor), Helmut Deutsch (Piano)
Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss, two great late-Romantic composers, met in their mid-twenties and remained lifelong friends. Despite their differences, which Mahler compared to miners digging from opposite sides of a mountain, they admired each other. This concert features songs from Mahler's "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" and Strauss's love songs, highlighting their closeness in this genre.

The four virtuoso percussionists of Elbtonal Percussion have mastered »creative crossover« like no other formation. The ensemble has been travelling the world for 25 years. Their collection of instruments also includes everyday objects that have been repurposed. Spontaneity and improvisation are the basis of all music, in every era. The result is a powerful and multicoloured encounter. Modern vocal composers such as Whitacre or Mäntyjärvi as well as Handel or William Byrd are tested for their percussive qualities. Vocal colours meet tambourine, tonewoods and marimba.

It’s off to new shores when classical vocal music meets fresh shanty folk, brass beats and a good dose of sailor’s yarn. A concert that makes the musical soul of the Hanseatic city dance.

NDR Vokalensemble: Schubertiade

Sun, Oct 20, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Vokalensemble, Julius Drake (Piano), Klaas Stok (Director)
Silvery, trembling chords awaken a sense of moonlight, a rapturous tenor voice soars over the piano and the male choir responds like an echo. As here in »Nachthelle«, Franz Schubert knew how to create poetic worlds with just a few means of expression. The NDR Vokalensemble and pianist Julius Drake, under the direction of its chief conductor Klaas Stok, dedicate a programme to this master of sonic miniatures, which mainly revolves around Schubert’s choral songs. For a romantic sound, a string quintet joins the eight-part choir in works such as »Gesang der Geister über den Wassern«. An enthusiastic follower of the pioneering Romantic composer was also Arnold Schönberg. The inventor of twelve-tone music would have been 150 years old this year. And so the NDR Vokalensemble is adding some Schönberg songs to the Schubert programme. Both composers wrote wonderful works for the voice, often infused with subtle humour. While Schoenberg even named his Opus 28 »Three Satires«, Schubert’s humour is more subtle. In his »Ständchen«, the soloist sneaks up to her sweetheart at night, »hesitantly quietly« according to the text. But in the original version, she is accompanied by a whole male choir. Does the sweetheart dare to come to the window with such concentrated masculinity?

Ensemble Resonanz / Saerom Park / Dirk Rothbrust

Tue, May 28, 2024, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Saerom Park (Cello), Dirk Rothbrust (Percussion), Gregor A. Mayrhofer (Conductor)
Therapy for the restless and the overstimulated – that’s one way to describe Rebecca Saunders’s music. »She focuses the ear on minute gradations of timbre and intonation, and turns her performers into Zen masters of attention and focus«, writes the Guardian. How fortunate, then, that no less than five Elbphilharmonie concerts are dedicated to Saunders this season. Bringing this spotlight to a close is the award-winning Ensemble Resonanz – with a full-length Saunders programme, of course. Characteristically of Saunders, the Concerto for Violoncello, Strings and Percussion explores a minute musical ornament, the trill. In the hands of the cellist Saerom Park, it is transformed, says Saunders, into an »unpredictable sound fragment«. A backdrop of shimmering overtones and glissandi animates the piece »Unbreathed« with an eerie magic. And to close, »All that dust« is an opportunity for the percussion to shine, brilliantly performed by Dirk Rothbrust. As one critic brilliantly summarised, »Saunders is looking to create moments of such intensity that music ceases to simply be sound, but becomes an all-consuming synaesthetic experience.«
