Luigi Nono always saw himself as a political person and composer. But rather than composing musical manifestos against social injustice, he believed in the power of music to educate and enlighten. As in 1956, when he – in his large-scale cantata »Il canto sospeso« – translated farewell letters by members of the resistance that had been sentenced to death into a stirring and highly poetic tonal language. The German-American conductor and Nono specialist Jonathan Stockhammer now presents this »suspended song«... Read full text

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, NDR Vokalensemble, MDR-Rundfunkchor, Alan Gilbert (Conductor)
»Elbphilharmonie Visions« enters its second round with musical fireworks: under the baton of chief conductor and festival initiator Alan Gilbert, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra performs the new work »World Builder, Creature« by young British high-flyer Alex Paxton. »I want to make music that makes me feel most alive when I’m writing it and when I’m listening to it,« explains the 33-year-old. The result: an unmistakable blend of video game soundtracks, virtuoso chamber music and jazz improvisation, which was honoured with the Claussen Simon Composition Prize.

Ingo Metzmacher is one of the great explorers among conductors. He tirelessly explores new and little-known areas of the repertoire. His curiosity already characterised him during his time as General Music Director in Hamburg between 1997 and 2005. And this also characterises the vocal symphonic programme with which he returns to the podium of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in November. One day before his 67th birthday, Metzmacher conducts two rarely performed works by two jubilarians from the Romantic and modern eras with a round birthday in 2024 – and fills the stage in the Grand Hall with an opulent line-up that, alongside the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, includes the MDR-Rundfunkchor and nine vocal soloists.

NDR Vokalensemble / Martina Batič

Sun, Apr 6, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Vokalensemble, Martina Batič (Director)
Martina Batič has already conducted the world’s best choirs such as the Swedish Radio Choir and the Bavarian Radio Choir. Now the Slovenian is visiting the NDR Vokalensemble as a guest conductor. For her debut, Martina Batič has chosen contemporary vocal works from Northern Europe and the Baltic States. Sven-David Sandström’s elegiac choral music »Sonnets of Darkness and Love« opens the programme. Dedicated to his compatriot, the Swedish jazz musician Nils Landgren, wistful blues vocals and the warm sounds of a trombone rise above the muted vocal fabric.

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Jonathan Bloxham

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester
Semyon Bychkov very much regrets having to withdraw from the concerts due to a planned hip operation. Jonathan Bloxham, whose concerts in September 2023 with works by Britten and Mendelssohn may still be remembered by NDR subscribers to the G and H series, will take over as conductor instead. The Briton, currently Music Director of Lucerne Theatre and Chief Conductor of the Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra, was mentored by none other than Paavo Järvi, has conducted orchestras such as the London Symphony and BBC Symphony Orchestra and is a regular guest of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Before embarking on his conducting career, he enjoyed success as a cellist with the Busch Trio. The programme remains unchanged. Subscribers and ticket purchasers will be informed of the change by email.

Put down the gaming console, get off the couch – and into the Elbphilharmonie! On this evening, the hits that make the hearts of all gamers and science fiction fans beat faster are on the programme: music from »Fortnite«, »Starfield«, »Clash of Clans« and »Chrono Cross« as well as from »Star Trek«, »Star Wars«, »Interstellar« and »The Matrix«. And all performed live by real people from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in the galactically spectacular hall of the Elbphilharmonie! It’s not only a feast for the ears, but also for the eyes. The composers and arrangers were happy to use the full range of the high-gloss orchestral sound to depict the most daring fantasy worlds – the creation of which can be best observed at the Elbphilharmonie.

Anton Bruckner would have turned 200 years old on 4 September 2024 – an occasion for the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra to focus on important works by the great composer and organist throughout the season. On this evening in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall, the audience can immerse itself in the various facets of his work and influence: Bruckner’s Seventh, perhaps his most popular symphony, meets lesser-known sacred music by the former organist of St Florian’s Abbey and Linz Cathedral.

Born in Teheran, Sara Abazari is one of today’s leading voices in her country’s contemporary music. Her two latest compositions, which were recently premiered in the Berlin Philharmonie and the Konzerthaus, are directly connected with the movement »Woman, Life, Freedom« and the prominent role of women in Iran. »in solidum« is a piece that was premiered in its first version in autumn 2023; the new, large-scale orchestral work by the composer, who studied in Cologne and Vienna, is now being performed by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. With Galina Ustwolskaja (1919-2006), the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra preesents one of the 20th century’s most uncompromising composers after the interval. Ms Ustwolskaja gained a reputation for her visionary and always highly unusual combinations of instruments: »Dies irae« is scored for eight double basses, piano and a large, resonant wooden block, which the percussionist beats with enigmatic hammer blows. Performances of the work produce the picture, precisely calculated by the composer, of an archaic ritual that evokes a set of metaphors between death, protest and apotheosis: this is a »breakthrough piece«, a musical onslaught on all conventional boundaries, and indisputably Ustwolskaja’s most famous work. The evening opens with Edgar Varèse’s virtuoso piece »Intégrales« for wind instruments and percussion, one of the founding documents of 20th century music. Written for the avant-garde »International Composers’ Guild«, which was founded in 1921 by Carlos Salzedo and Varèse himself, »Intégrales« was given its first performance in March 1925 in New York’s Aeolian Hall.

Out of the traditional concert halls and into the vibrant Hamburg club scene! In the »voiceXchange« concert series, four singers from the NDR Vokalensemble regularly invite artists and ensembles from different genres and styles to explore new ways of musical collaboration and build artistic bridges to the here and now. At this concert, Hamburg’s Club Gruenspan will be transformed into a venue for musical discoveries far removed from the classical cosmos.
