This concert by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of honorary guest conductor Iván Fischer is the perfect opportunity.The Overture on Hebrew Themes is friendly, playful and folkloric. By contrast, the Second Piano Concerto features all the shock effects that made Prokofiev famous. The music is like that of a wicked fairy tale, but can also be heard as the missing link between Rachmaninoff and the brutal ‘machine music’ of the 1920s. The work is rarely performed live owing to the extremely difficult piano part. Nelson Goerner is one of few to venture such a performance. Hearing the Argentine pianist in concert is invariably an unforgettable experience.With the ballet Cinderella (based on Perrault’s ‘Cendrillon’), Prokofiev proved himself a worthy successor to Tchaikovsky – and was even heralded as ‘the new waltz king’ by a Russian critic at the time. Performed less frequently than Prokofiev’s earlier ballet Romeo and Juliet, it nevertheless features the same compelling blend of elegance, whimsy and magical orchestral colour. Prokofiev himself claimed it contains some of the best passages he ever composed.

Since her first appearance in 2001, the violinist Lisa Batiashvili has always given performances to look forward to. She now returns to perform as soloist in Prokofiev’s delightfully melodious Second Violin Concerto. Klaus Mäkelä has paired it with Rachmaninoff’s irresistible Second Symphony, a work with which the composer avenged the failure of his First. And how! The melancholy theme of the third movement has brought tears to the eyes of many since the 1908 premiere, and will always continue to do so.Also on the programme is a surprise: a newly commissioned work, Body Cosmic, by the American composer Ellen Reid to mark her residency at the Concertgebouw and with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 2023-2024 season. Audiences have come to know her as a musical jack-of-all-trades, who moves effortlessly across a wide range of disparate styles and genres – from classical to avant-garde pop and electronic soundscapes. Gipfeltreffen zweier bedeutender Musiker unserer Zeit. Der Geiger Renaud Capuçon gastiert mit dem Budapest Festival Orchestra und Dirigent Iván Fischer in der Philharmonie. Gipfeltreffen auch bei den Komponisten: Felix Mendelssohn steht neben Richard Strauss.Begonnen wirdas das Konzert mit dem von den Musikerinnen und Musikern des Orchesters gesungenen Morgengruß von Fanny Hensel eine wunderbare Überleitung zum Violinkonzert ihres Bruders Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, das zweifellos ein Konzert-Klassiker der Romantik ist. Der französische Geiger Renaud Capuçon zählt zu den gefragtesten Solisten der internationalen Musikwelt und ist für dieses Werk ein idealer Botschafter. Daneben präsentiert das Budapest Festival Orchestra unter Iván Fischer ein oft verkanntes Meisterwerk von Richard Strauss. »Ich wollte mit Josephs Legende den Tanz erneuern«, meinte der Komponist rückblickend über sein Ballett »Josephs Legende«.
