Elim Chan & Rudolf Buchbinder

Thu, Dec 22, 2022, 20:00
Elim Chan (Conductress), Rudolf Buchbinder (Piano), Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Long live the classics! Rudolf Buchbinder, the grandseigneur of the piano and a welcome guest at the BRSO, will play Mozart’s C minor Piano Concerto of 1786. The gloomy, ominous opening is unusual for Mozart’s concertos; and even if a more relaxed, almost cheerful mood reigns in the Larghetto, the final set of variations returns us to the wind-swept C minor atmosphere. Elim Chan, a conductor born in Hong Kong, will open the concert with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, a paean to the ideal of liberty and revolt against political suppression. Rounding off the evening is a piece never before played in Munich by the BRSO: Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony.

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Steven Isserlis / Elim Chan

Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Steven Isserlis (Cello), Elim Chan (Conductor)
»I want interaction. I want people to feel something. I want them to ask questions,« explained Elim Chan in an interview. The Hong Kong-born conductor is currently one of the most sought-after musicians of her generation. The Vienna Musikverein dedicated a three-part portrait series to her in the 2022/23 season. And after Elim Chan’s debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2022, the press wrote euphorically of a »miracle of control and understanding«. In this concert, Elim Chan has a musician at her side who is one of only two living cellists to have been inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame and who continues to captivate audiences with his unique musicianship: Steven Isserlis. He plays Joseph Haydn’s long-lost Cello Concerto in C major, in which late Baroque solemnity is combined with the virtuosity of Viennese Classicism. The elegant lightness of the concerto conceals highly demanding passages that require a great deal of dexterity from the soloist.

Anna Vinnitskaya | MCO Academy | Mahler Chamber Orchestra | Elim Chan

Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 18:00
Anna Vinnitskaya (Piano), MCO Academy (Ensemble), Mahler Chamber Orchestra (Ensemble), Elim Chan (Conductor)
Shostakovich and Prokofiev were repeatedly targeted by Soviet art critics. Prokofiev appeased them with his heroic Fifth Symphony, while Shostakovich did so with his highly virtuosic 2nd Piano Concerto, brilliantly performed by Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya. Vinnitskaya, who won the ECHO Klassik award in 2014 for her recording of the concerto, is now accompanied by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Elim Chan. Prokofiev's 5th Symphony, written in 1944 during the Soviet victory over Nazi troops, also displays combative traits.

Klaus Mäkelä conducts Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev with the Concertgebouw Orchestra

Wed, Nov 13, 2024, 20:15
Concertgebouw Orchestra, Klaus Mäkelä (Conductor), Lisa Batiashvili (Violin)
Since her first appearance in 2001, the violinist Lisa Batiashvili has always given performances to look forward to. She now returns to perform as soloist in Prokofiev’s delightfully melodious Second Violin Concerto. Klaus Mäkelä has paired it with Rachmaninoff’s irresistible Second Symphony, a work with which the composer avenged the failure of his First. And how! The melancholy theme of the third movement has brought tears to the eyes of many since the 1908 premiere, and will always continue to do so.Also on the programme is a surprise: a newly commissioned work, Body Cosmic, by the American composer Ellen Reid to mark her residency at the Concertgebouw and with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 2023-2024 season. Audiences have come to know her as a musical jack-of-all-trades, who moves effortlessly across a wide range of disparate styles and genres – from classical to avant-garde pop and electronic soundscapes. This should be interesting!

Prokofiev and Stravinsky

Sat, Mar 29, 2025, 15:00
Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Maxime Pascal (Conductor), Amalie Stalheim (Cello)
The award-winning Norwegian-Swedish cellist Amalie Stalheim has an international career at the highest level. She has been a soloist with a range of top orchestras and has played chamber music with stars such as Janine Jansen, Yo-Yo Ma, and Leif Ove Andsnes.Together with the visiting Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, she is the soloist in Prokofiev's magnificent Sinfonia concertante for cello and orchestra. In an almost magical way, the cello's lyrical qualities are exploited, and the music is also charged with power and drama. The orchestra is led by the young French conductor Maxime Pascal, who has conducted a great deal of opera throughout Europe, including at La Scala in Milan.Like Prokofiev, we consider Stravinsky to be one of the giants of the 20th century. Symphony in C was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and completed shortly after his escape to the USA in 1940. It was a difficult time. In addition to being in exile, Stravinsky had recently lost his first wife, and he himself had been treated for tuberculosis. However, the music sounds like an antidote: classically pure, playful, and rhythmically swinging.Equally captivating rhythmically is the French composer Camille Pépin's evocative Laniakea, which opens the concert. Laniakea means "immense heaven" in Hawaiian and is the name of a gigantic star cluster that includes the Milky Way and our solar system. Pépin (born in 1990) has received considerable attention in recent years from a range of top European orchestras.

Mendelssohn and Bruckner

Thu, Oct 24, 2024, 19:00
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Ryan Bancroft (Conductor), Augustin Hadelich (Violin)
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's violin concerto ranks among the priceless masterpieces of classical music. He wrote it for his childhood friend and violin virtuoso Ferdinand David, and the result was extremely successful – for with its spiritual airiness and melodic beauty, the violin concerto is one of the most beloved works of all time.Violinist Augustin Hadelich began performing concerts at the age of 8 but suffered serious burns in an accident at the age of 15. After two years and many surgeries, he was able to resume playing the violin and now performs worldwide with leading orchestras and conductors. "It is a delight to work with Hadelich, for there is a clarity in his playing and everything is so well thought out without losing spontaneity", says chief conductor Ryan Bancroft, who leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.Anton Bruckner's extensive and grand symphonies never cease to amaze. According to Bruckner himself, the opening horn signal in the Fourth Symphony symbolizes the dawn after the night's rest. A captivating symphonic landscape emerges where the full range of the orchestra is used. This is Bruckner's most performed and beloved symphony, and it is also he who gave it the subtitle "The Romantic."Read more about chief conductor Ryan Bancroft
