Tan Dun is considered one of the most impressive and influential composers of our time – a crossover artist who combines classical and modern elements in his music and creates a connection between East and West. His work »Choral Concerto: Nine«, inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and composed to mark the 250th anniversary of his birth in 2020, now celebrates its German premiere at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

Chamber Orchestra of Europe / Sir András Schiff

Tue, May 28, 2024, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Olivier Stankiewicz (Oboe), Rie Koyama (Bassoon), Lorenza Borrani (Violin), Richard Lester (Cello), Sir András Schiff (Piano), Sir András Schiff (Director)
»There are orchestras, good ones, great ones, and then there is the Chamber Orchestra of Europe«, said Sir András Schiff once. The pianist first got to know the orchestra in 1985. And over the course of their many concerts together, Schiff discovered a passion for conducting. From the piano, he now conducts a classical and Romantic programme in which Joseph Haydn meets his admirer Johannes Brahms. From Haydn the Viennese classicist we have the Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, bassoon, violin, violoncello and orchestra, a piece that was enthusiastically received at its London premiere in 1792. With his orchestral variations on a small (choral) theme from a Haydn divertimento, Brahms wrote his first great orchestral work in 1873, after sketches for a symphony had been incorporated into his first piano concerto in the 1850s. The work, which Sir András Schiff has repeatedly reinterpreted throughout his career, sounds correspondingly symphonic. With all these great pieces, Schiff and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe celebrate almost 40 years of musical friendship!

Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Sunwook Kim

Mon, Mar 24, 2025, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Chamber Orchestra of Europe (Orchestra), Sunwook Kim (Piano), Sunwook Kim (Director)
The pianist Sunwook Kim has been acclaimed for his sensitivity, brilliance and stylistic confidence – all qualities well-suited to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, whose Piano Concertos No. 3 and No. 4 he performs with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. While the Third is tragic, serious and combative, the Fourth is lyrical, impetuous and playful. Two works by contemporary British composers will also be performed: Anna Clyne's string work Stride, which is inspired by Beethoven's music, and Helen Grime's Elegiac inflections, which demonstrates the diverse sonic possibilities of a wind ensemble.
