ensemble reflektor / Vivi Vassileva / Vimbayi Kaziboni

Mon, Jul 7, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
ensemble reflektor, Vivi Vassileva (Percussion), Vimbayi Kaziboni (Conductor)
Can discarded objects actually be made to sound? The renowned composer Gregor A. Mayrhofer explores this question in his Recycling Concerto. He wrote it for the virtuoso and energetic percussionist Vivi Vassileva, who received the Leonard Bernstein Award at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2023. Old plastic containers and crates are turned into drums, discarded jam jars and bottle caps into shakers, deposit bottles tuned by changing the air pressure via valves into a complete marimba – this is criticism of environmental pollution and the joy of discovering new possibilities and sounds in one. And Vassileva knows how to use this conglomeration of newly created instruments with a dreamlike touch. She is supported by the ensemble reflektor, which has already caused a sensation at the SHMF several times with its innovative programmes and captivating interpretations. The orchestra will provide the crowning finale with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.

Pleistozän

Fri, Apr 11, 2025, 18:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
ensemble reflektor, Katharina Morin (Conductor), André Baumeister (Concept), André Baumeister (Moderator), Andrea Hoever (Concept)
The Arctic is an alien habitat, a magnet for travellers, researchers and adventurers. And in the meantime, the continent has become a symbol of climate change. In the innovative scientific concert entitled »Pleistozän« (Pleistocene – the name of the last great ice age), geographer Dr André Baumeister takes the audience on a great journey through time illustrating the development of this unique habitat. He shows pictures and films, reports on his journeys along the Norwegian coast to the upper Arctic, Spitsbergen and the east coast of Greenland – and brings the beauty and fragility of the Arctic to life. An orchestra plays works to accompany the film, including music by Australian composer Nigel Westlake, who himself ventured onto the eternal ice with his »Antarctica Suite« of 1991.
