Mon, Jul 7, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
ensemble reflektor, Vivi Vassileva (Percussion), Vimbayi Kaziboni (Conductor)
Can discarded objects actually be made to sound? The renowned composer Gregor A. Mayrhofer explores this question in his Recycling Concerto. He wrote it for the virtuoso and energetic percussionist Vivi Vassileva, who received the Leonard Bernstein Award at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2023. Old plastic containers and crates are turned into drums, discarded jam jars and bottle caps into shakers, deposit bottles tuned by changing the air pressure via valves into a complete marimba – this is criticism of environmental pollution and the joy of discovering new possibilities and sounds in one. And Vassileva knows how to use this conglomeration of newly created instruments with a dreamlike touch. She is supported by the ensemble reflektor, which has already caused a sensation at the SHMF several times with its innovative programmes and captivating interpretations. The orchestra will provide the crowning finale with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.
