St Matthew Passion

Sat, Mar 21, 2026, 19:00
Masaaki Suzuki (Conductor), Nicolas Mulroy (Evangelist), Hana Blažíková (Soprano), Miku Yasukawa (Soprano), Alexander Chance (Alto), Christopher Lowrey (Alto), Raphael Höhn (Tenor), Shimon Yoshida (Tenor), Stephan MacLeod (Bass), Toru Kaku (Bass), Kampen Boys Choir
The St Matthew Passion is one of the best-known and most impressive compositions by Bach. Bach’s interpretation of the story of the Passion of Jesus is brilliant, compelling and moving. The traditional performances by the Bach Society are known all over the world, and this year they will be led by one of today’s best Baroque conductors: Masaaki Suzuki. One of today’s best Baroque conductors“There are few musicians who know Bach as well as conductor, organist and harpsichordist Masaaki Suzuki. He is noted as an important representative of historical performance practice and as a true Bach specialist. He has recorded nearly all Bach’s choral works with his famous ensemble Bach Collegium Japan. In 2005, Suzuki was a guest conductor of the St Matthew Passion with the Bach Society. Twenty years later, he is returning with even more experience and a deeper vision of Bach’s masterpiece. He says, “J.S. Bach had maybe four opportunities in his lifetime to perform the St Matthew Passion, but I have performed this over hundred times all over the world. Despite this fact, it never became something gentle or amicable, always asking me to delve deeper, desire stronger, seek further beauty, and for my full devotion. What can I do more? Yet again, I shall pray and perform with all my heart and soul.”

St Matthew Passion

Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 19:00
Muziekgebouw, Hertog Jan Zaal (Eindhoven)
Hans-Christoph Rademann (Conductor), Benedikt Kristjánsson (Evangelist), Carine Tinney (Soprano), Kristen Witmer (Soprano), Terry Wey (Alto), Olivia Vermeulen (Alto), Georg Poplutz (Tenor), James Gilchrist (Tenor), Matthias Winckhler (Bass), Tobias Berndt (Bass), Kampen Boys Choir
Every year, for more than a century, we have been performing one of Bach’s most popular works: the St Matthew Passion. This year, the prominent German conductor Hans-Christoph Rademann is leading our ensemble.Bach’s masterly music keeps moving us“Betrayal, condemnation and death, but above all – love. Although the words of the St Matthew Passion are age-old, the story and the message are still relevant today. And every year, Bach’s masterly music moves us once again. Bach’s masterpiece is in good hands with Rademann. In every St Matthew Passion he performs, this real Bach man – founder of the Dresdner Kammerchor, artistic director of the Bachakademie Stuttgart and regular name at the international music festival Bachfest – seeks out a new contemporary approach, always keeping a careful eye on the monumental character of the work. For decades, he has been one of the most successful choral conductors in Germany. Plenty of reason, therefore, to invite Rademann as the guest conductor for our traditional Passion concerts.
