Pulcinella, the witty harlequin from the Commedia dell'arte, conquered the ballet stage in 1920, with music composed by Stravinsky. Around 1900, jazz's global rise reached the Soviet Union, where it was "Sovietized" by composers like Shostakovich. The concert also features Villa-Lobos's Brazilian train sounds.
Immer wieder hat sich der brasilianische Fotograf Sebastião Salgado mit der faszinierenden Welt des Amazonas befasst und ihre Schönheit wie Bedrohung in Bilder gebannt. In einem spektakulären Projekt, das erstmals in Deutschland zu erleben ist, bereichert er sie nun um eine Begegnung mit Musik. Der Amazonas-Regenwald – ungezügelte Urgewalt, Quell des Lebens, »grüne Hölle«. Immer wieder hat sich Sebastião Salgado mit dieser faszinierenden Welt befasst, hat ihre ganz eigene Schönheit wie auch ihre Bedrohung in eindringlichen Aufnahmen festgehalten.
Sebastião Salgado, der brasilianische Fotograf, Fotoreporter und Umweltaktivist, hat den Amazonas-Regenwald in seiner ganzen Pracht wie auch Bedrohtheit abgelichtet. Seine magischen Bilder sind hier auf einer Großleinwand zu erleben – zusammen mit einer eindrucksvollen Regenwald-Suite. Diese spektakuläre Bild-Ton-Begegnung ist jetzt zum ersten Mal in Deutschland zu erleben.
In the opening concert the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under Thierry Fischer demonstrates the broad range of art music from the many “Americas”: Charles Ives evokes New York’s Central Park, while Heitor Villa-Lobos explores the sound worlds of South American rhythms. The Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera’s Violin Concerto is given a spectacular rendition by Hilary Hahn. And in Edgard Varèse’s “Amériques”, the utopia of endless space finds spectacular sonic form.
On its debut CD »Raíces«, Latin Strings presents its own musical roots with works from Chile, Brazil and Argentina. The concert at the Elbphilharmonie will also feature Dvorák’s »American« quartet, a classic of the string quartet literature.
