Michael Barenboim enjoyed a close artistic and personal friendship with Pierre Boulez, whose Anthèmes 2 he performed for the composer’s 90th birthday in 2015 in Berlin, London, Paris, and Salzburg, among other cities. Joined by electronic musician Gilbert Nouno, he brings this complex score for violin and live electronics back to the Pierre Boulez Saal. The program also includes solo works by Gérard Grisey, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, and Kareem Roustom.

The Echo Klassik award-winning work »ÜberBach« is coming to the stage of the Elbphilharmonie. Sebastian Knauer has already celebrated great success worldwide with the piano concerto composed for him by Arash Safaian. The continuation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music into today’s world of sound fascinates, touches and inspires. The second soloist on stage alongside Sebastian Knauer is the Danish vibraphonist Morten Friis, who recently stormed the international charts with his hit »Cynical« as the founder of the band Safri Duo. The two soloists will be accompanied by the internationally acclaimed Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Also on the programme are the 5th Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1050 and the Piano Concerto BWV 1052, two original works by J.S. Bach, as well as excerpts from »Souvenir de Florence« by Peter Tchaikovsky, the »Holberg Suite« by Edvard Grieg and the Serenade op. 20 by Edward Elgar.

Throughout the 60-year span of his collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Daniel Barenboim has never conducted the music of Gustav Mahler. Until now. Two late works can be heard, beginning with the expressive Adagio from the unfinished Tenth Symphony. Painful melancholy prevails here, as it does in Das Lied von der Erde (Songs of the Earth), which looks back on the lost beauty of life. Formally located between a song cycle and a symphony, this work was, according to Mahler, “probably the most personal thing I have done so far”.
