Daniel Barenboim conducts Mahler

Date & Time
Fri, May 9, 2025, 20:00
Throughout the 60-year span of his collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Daniel Barenboim has never conducted the music of Gustav Mahler. Until now. Two late works can be heard, beginning with the expressive Adagio from the unfinished Tenth Symphony. Painful melancholy prevails here, as it does in Das Lied von der Erde (Songs of the Earth), which looks back on the lost beauty of life. Formally located between a song cycle and a symphony, this work was, according to Mahler, “probably the most personal thing I have done so far”.

Mahler Festival: Daniel Barenboim, Berliner Philharmoniker - Symphony No. 10 & Das Lied von der Erde

Sun, May 18, 2025, 20:15
Berliner Philharmoniker, Daniel Barenboim (Conductor), Dorottya Láng (Mezzo-Soprano), Benjamin Bruns (Tenor)
One of the world's most legendary orchestras, the Berliner Philharmoniker, will be led by Daniel Barenboim on the final night of the Mahler Festival. 'The Tenth is and remains music of the future,' the legendary pianist and conductor says of Mahler's swan song. He also conducts the impressive non-symphony Das Lied von der Erde. Vocal soloists in Das Lied are Dorottya Láng and Benjamin Bruns. The world is turning - roughly the tenor of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. In texts inspired by Chinese poems, life is seen as a continuous stage of transition. In both this work and the Tenth Symphony, the idea of mortality played a major role. Mahler knew he was incurably ill, and had also lost his infant daughter. He had lost everything and had to 'learn to walk like a newborn again', he wrote to a friend. That did not come to pass. Of the Tenth Symphony, he completed only the stirring Adagio, performed tonight by the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Vriendenrepetitie: Klaus Mäkelä conducts Mahler

Thu, Sep 19, 2024, 09:30
Concertgebouw Orchestra, Klaus Mäkelä (Conductor)
Only members of Concertvrienden can visit this rehearsal. More information on Concertvrienden. When Gustav Mahler came to Amsterdam to conduct the Dutch premiere of his First Symphony in 1903, a close collaboration started – so began the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s much-vaunted Mahler tradition. Klaus Mäkelä steps into that tradition with respect and self-confidence. He previously gave stunning interpretations of the Sixth and the Third, now it is time for the First, which he calls Mahler's 'pastoral’ symphony: ‘I’ve always been attracted to its imaginative beauty, and its freshness. The expression is extremely clear, and it contains all the elements of his later work.’Klaus Mäkelä opens the concert with Verklärte Nacht by Mahler's contemporary Arnold Schoenberg, who was born 150 years ago in Vienna. The late-romantic work is based on a poem by Richard Dehmel about a woman who confesses to her loved one that she is carrying someone else’s child. The music closely follows the conversation and draws the listener into an intimate emotional journey leading from fear and guilt to pure happiness.

Daniel Harding

Daniel Harding (Conductor), Fleur Barron (Mezzo-Soprano), Andrew Staples (Tenor), Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
“I only program music I love, because otherwise what’s the point?” Fleur Barron recently told The Times, which praised the Singaporean-British mezzo-soprano as “a knockout performer.” The young, exciting, and passionate singer (whose mentor, incidentally, is Barbara Hannigan) will make her debut with the BRSO in Mahler’s Lied von der Erde. She will be joined by tenor Andrew Staples, who has performed many times with the BRSO, as well as guest conductor Daniel Harding. Mendelssohn’s Fifth Symphony – written in honor of Martin Luther – has not been performed by the BRSO in a long time. The composer would have actually liked to burn the work, whose first movement he described as a “fat, bristly animal.” Fortunately, his intention was never realized.
