This is partly due to a recent biographical film (promoted in Poland by Jakub Józef Orlinski at the Warsaw Philharmonic) about the composer’s emotional life. Hence the evening of Valentine’s Day (whether you celebrate it or not) is worth spending with Bernstein’s vibrant, passionate and witty music. In addition, suites from his famous stage works, the operetta Candide and the musical West Side Story, will be orchestrated by none other than the composer’s student and later collaborator and friend Eiji Oue. The evening’s programme will also feature the fascinating attempt made by Malcolm Bolcom at the end of the twentieth century to transfer the Baroque concerto grosso form to contemporary music. In the group of soloists – called the concertina – the American composer placed an unusual ensemble of four saxophonists. It might seem that the most romantic accent of our Valentine’s Day concert will be the suite from Dominick Argent’s opera The Dream of Valentino. However, the opera’s libretto refers not to the patron saint of lovers, but to the famous Hollywood actor, dancer and romantic lead of the silent film era, Rudolph Valentino.

Open Day: 30 years Bamberg Concert Hall

The concert hall of Bamberg, situated on the picturesque banks of the river Regnitz, has been the centre of the region of Upper Franconia for events, trade fairs, congresses – and has been the home of the Bamberg Symphony for 30 years now. In the Joseph Keilberth Hall, with an audience of more than 1,400, the orchestra plays major symphonic concerts, but also chamber music, concerts for students, educational programmes and organ concerts are presented here. Furthermore, many award-winning CD recordings by the Bamberg Symphony have been made on this stage with its much-praised acoustics. On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the concert hall opens its doors and offers a colourful and varied concert programme for all ages. On this day, the Bamberg Symphony will perform Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 under the baton of Gemma New in a very special concert in honour of »their own« home venue. The afternoon will already see a revisit to »Ruby Red« as well as the popular Seat Cushion Concerts for the little ones. Christian Schmitt will also be performing on the Jann-organ. Sao Paolo Symphony Orchestra Opening Day: 1. concert

In the opening concert the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under Thierry Fischer demonstrates the broad range of art music from the many “Americas”: Charles Ives evokes New York’s Central Park, while Heitor Villa-Lobos explores the sound worlds of South American rhythms. The Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera’s Violin Concerto is given a spectacular rendition by Hilary Hahn. And in Edgard Varèse’s “Amériques”, the utopia of endless space finds spectacular sonic form.

Film Concert: Charlie Chaplin »Pay Day« & »The Pilgrim«

This traditional film music concert offers a very special feast for the eyes and ears! Two classic silent films by Charlie Chaplin – a master of slapstick who also had a unique talent for exploring social topics with humour and penetrating insight – are projected onto the big screen. »Pay Day« and »Pilgrim« are hilarious yet profound masterpieces by an all-round genius. Chaplin, of course, also composed the virtuosic film music performed by the Symphoniker Hamburg on this evening in accompaniment to the tragicomic hero’s stumbling through a series of absurd situations.
