THE NECKS

Date & Time
Wed, Nov 6, 2024, 19:30
Over the course of 37 years, The Necks have released 18 albums of music that defies description: not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, and yet all of these, and more. The band’s extended improvisations, frequently underpinned by an insistent groove, have a deceptive simplicity that masks the music’s deep layers, leading the Los Angeles Times to call the group “a magic act masquerading as a piano trio.” The Necks make their Pierre Boulez Saal debut with a career-spanning program of classics and recent pieces.

Sona Jobarteh is the first professional female kora player to have conquered a previously male domain. She comes from a family of Gambian musicians with a long tradition of playing the kora, a 21-stringed West African bridge harp. Until now, women were only allowed to sing to the sounds of the kora – Sona Jobarteh combines both in her meditative music-making. Born and raised in London, she studied both classical music and traditional African music. Sona Jobarteh shows us how well tradition and innovation can complement one another.

The Naghash Ensemble Armenia

Tue, May 14, 2024, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Hasmik Baghdasaryan (Soprano), Tatevik Movsesyan (Soprano), Arpine Ter-Petrosyan (Alto), Harutyun Chkolyan (Duduk), Harutyun Chkolyan (Shvi), Aram Nikoghosyan (Oud), Tigran Hovhannisyan (Dhol), Tigran Hovhannisyan (Dumbek), Tigran Hovhannisyan (Daf), John Hodian (Piano), John Hodian (Composer)
The Naghash Ensemble blends the deeply rooted spirituality of Armenian folk music with new classical, post-minimal and infectious energy. Three female classical singers and four virtuosic instrumentalists on the duduk, oud, dhol and piano play music based on the words of the medieval poet and Christian priest Mkrtich Naghash. Naghash was a 15th-century painter, poet and priest who sought to promote inter-religious dialogue. He initially lived on the shores of Lake Van in what is today Turkey, but later moved to Constantinople (Istanbul today) because of religious conflict. There, he processed his experiences of exile in poems that explore the themes of displacement, foreignness and the impossibility of arriving. Subsequent Armenian history is also marked by ethnic and religious suppression, expulsion and violence, culminating in the Ottoman Empire genocide of 1915 in which hundreds of thousands of Armenians were killed or forced into exile. The grandmother of the Armenian-American composer John Hodian, who is a pianist with the Naghash Ensemble, fled to the USA to escape the genocide. No wonder Naghash’s poems moved him so deeply as a symbol of the fate of his people: »The words leapt off the page and into my soul.« Hodian’s »Songs of Exile« are carried by traditional Armenian melodies and rhythms, embodied by the oboe-like duduk, the oud lute and the dhol and dumbek drums. Combined with neo-classical sounds on the piano and the voices of three female singers – who are trained in western classical music as well as Armenian folk music – there emerges a haunting and unique soundscape.

The Count Basie Orchestra, Scotty Barnhart (Leader), Denise Thimes (Vocals)
The Count Basie Orchestra is one of jazz’s most iconic big bands and has continued to perform around the world, even 40 years after its founder, William “Count” Basie, passed away. Count Basie was born in 1904 and began his career as a pianist and organist. He soon started exploring his love for the blues and joined Benny Moten's orchestra before forming his own band in 1935 – The Count Basie Orchestra. This big band has been one of the foremost representatives of Kansas City swing and contributed significantly to the big band era. Basie encouraged his musicians to compose and arrange music, which contributed to the unique sound and enduring success. Among the jazz greats who worked with Basie are Lester Young, Billie Holiday, and Joe Williams.Since Basie's death in 1984, The Count Basie Orchestra has continued to perform under the leadership of Scotty Barnhart, with some members originally hired by Basie himself. The Count Basie Orchestra has been awarded 18 Grammy Awards and has performed for royalty as well as in numerous films and TV shows. The latest album, Basie Swings the Blues, won a Grammy in 2024. World The voices of Persia

Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Hossein Alizadeh & Hamavayan Ensemble (Ethno folk ensemble), Zohre Gholipour (Vocals), Parisa Pooladian (Rubab), Saba Alizadeh (Kamāncheh), Mehdi Emami (Vocals), Houshmand Ebadi (Ney), Ali Boustan (Setar), Hossein Alizadeh (Tar), Hossein Alizadeh (Composition), Behnam Samani (Daf), Behnam Samani (Tombak)
Hossein Alizadeh is a musical legend in his native Iran. He plays the Persian long-necked lute tār with unmatched virtuosity. Yet the musician is not a traditionalist. Though his playing is rooted in the traditional music of his country, his performances bring it into the here and now. For example, he has developed a new instrument from the traditional setar: the shourangiz, whose name means “to give passion”. With the two singers Zohre Gholipour and Mehdi Emami, we also hear two of Iran’s most important musical voices.

Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band

Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Melvin Butler (Tenor Saxophone), Melvin Butler (Soprano saxophone), Myron Walden (Alto saxophone), Myron Walden (Bass clarinet), Jon Cowherd (Piano), Roland Guerin (Bass), Brian Blade (Drums)
With Brian Blade, one of the currently most influential jazz drummers comes to the Elbphilharmonie. He played alongside Wayne Shorter, Danilo Perez and John Patitucci in the legendary Wayne Shorter Quartet for two decades, sat at the drums with music greats, such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Rebekka Bakken and John Scofield, and enhanced albums by Bob Dylan and Norah Jones with his bespoke beats. The astounding variability with which he can adapt his playing to the stylistic approaches of any music has so far earned him four Grammy Awards. Thankfully, despite the many projects, he still drums with his »Fellowship Band«, which he established more than 25 years ago with the ideally matched jazz pianist Jon Cowherd. In the past year, with »Kings Highway«, the band has now released its seventh studio album. Here, the instruments once again blend into a perfectly harmonious sound. »Everyone adds so much and everyone takes care of the needs of the others,« explained a long-standing band member of the irresistible magic of this unique constellation.

In their programme »It’s About Time«, the trio composes playfully and, using cinematic tricks, the rules of time don’t apply – freeze, fast-forward and rewind the moment in music and video or switch on the time lapse? No problem! Tin Men and the Telephone formed in Amsterdam and work meticulously there on ever new concepts for their concerts. They expertly combine their brilliant improvisation skills with influences from hip-hop, pop, jazz and the daily madness of the Internet. With their innovative multimedia shows, they perform worldwide at the biggest jazz festivals, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, the London Jazz Festival and jazzahead!
