Kurt Weill composed his Second Symphony in exile in France and the USA, having fled the National Socialists in Germany. In terms of style, he drew inspiration from the great German-speaking composers of the past, which is often interpreted as melancholic retrospection. Around 100 years earlier, a 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn visited the ruins of an abbey in Edinburgh and wrote to his parents about the experience: »Everything around is broken and mouldering and the bright sky shines in. I believe I have found the beginning of my Scottish symphony.« After this formative journey, almost 13 years would pass in which the musical memories of the country and its people matured into one of Mendelssohn’s most important symphonic works, his Symphony No. 3 in A minor.

Tumultuous, iridescent and mystical: the French composer Olivier Messiaen pulls out all the stops in his Turangalîla Symphony. Inspired by the Tristan legend, Messiaen’s work explores and expresses love and passion in all their facets. The title of this unique sound cosmos, Turangalîla, comes from Sanskrit and means »all at the same time, song of love, hymn to joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death« (Messiaen). In addition to a huge orchestra and piano obligato (a very challenging part!), the full-length work requires a solo ondes Martenot, an electronic keyboard instrument with a sound similar to the human voice. A passionate and moving evening with music that, according to its creator, »knows delicateness and vehemence, love and impetuousness; (…) music of stained glass church windows, a whirl of complementary colours, a theological rainbow«.

Claude Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" is his most popular and first significant symphonic work. Its innovative form and synthesis of nature and fantasy make it a key work of its era. Based on a poem by Stéphane Mallarmé, it depicts a faun awakening and recalling a flirtation with two nymphs. Debussy also composed "La Mer," evocative symphonic sketches inspired by the sea, reflecting his love for it and perhaps alluding to deeper metaphorical meanings of flowing and time.

Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera "Alceste" deeply impressed the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Years later, Mozart completed a symphonic trio. Franz Liszt, inspired by a drawing, revisited his symphonic poem form two decades later. Richard Wagner's "Tristan" prelude encapsulates the struggle of hopeless love.

Luciano Berio, a prominent 20th-century Italian composer, had a unique relationship with tradition, creating numerous arrangements and transcriptions of various composers. In his 1989 work "Rendering," based on Schubert's unfinished Symphony No. 10, his arranging and composing skills merge. Berio likened his restoration approach to that of frescoes, reviving old colors without hiding time's damage. 1907 was a devastating year for Mahler, marked by his daughter's death, a heart condition diagnosis, anti-Semitic attacks, and his resignation from the Vienna Court Opera. Seeking solace, he found "The Chinese Flute," which inspired "Das Lied von der Erde," his personal farewell to the world, with the final song, "Der Abschied," being the longest.

With what vigour I swam in this vast sea of poetry, caressed by the exuberant breeze of fantasy, under the warm rays of Shakespeare’s sun of love, and trusting in my strength to reach the wonderful island where the temple of pure art rises.« With »Roméo et Juliette«, Berlioz had – after a long search – finally created his symphonic theatre of dreams.

Mysteriöse Todesfälle sind in der Klassik keine Seltenheit! Mord und Totschlag gehören zur Tagesordnung. Da rollen die Köpfe, Menschen werden erschossen, erhängt und vergiftet. Bei diesem Krimikonzert läuft die Sache völlig aus dem Ruder, und die Grenzen zwischen Spiel und Realität verschwimmen. Eigentlich soll es ein Konzert mit kriminalistischen Anekdoten aus der Klassikwelt geben, doch dann hält ein Mord im Backstage die Musiker:innen und Juri Tetzlaff auf der Bühne in Atem. Alle stehen unter Verdacht, niemand darf den Saal verlassen, bis der Kriminalfall gelöst ist. Ein Konzert mit köstlichen Klassikhäppchen, garniert mit kriminalistischen Knobelaufgaben. Ein Programm für Krimiliebhaber:innen, Klassikeinsteiger:innen und alle, die mal etwas Neues ausprobieren wollen. Angsthäsinnen und Angsthasen können zu Hause bleiben! Ein spannendendes und interaktives Krimikonzert für Jugendliche ab 16 und Erwachsene. Jüngere Zuhörer:innen mit starken Nerven sind natürlich aber auch willkommen.

Mozart's "little" G minor symphony, written at age 17, gained fame through Miloš Forman's 1984 film "Amadeus." Mozart valued it enough to request the score ten years later. Completed on October 5, 1773, after his third Italian trip, it's his first minor key symphony, inspired by Haydn's 39th symphony. Mahler's Fifth Symphony quotes Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio." Mahler struggled with the Fifth, revising it multiple times. The famous Adagietto, a love letter to his wife Alma, shouldn't be played too slowly.

Under the direction of British conductor Geoffrey Paterson, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra presents a musical journey across the Atlantic, beginning with the diverse sounds and facets of American music in William Grant Still’s »Darker America«. Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto op. 14 then takes us into a world of virtuoso interpretation and emotional depth. After the interval, Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, also known as »From the New World«, will be performed. Dvořák, who was born in Bohemia in 1841, captured the hearts of Americans with this work and enriched the musical landscape of the »New World«.
