Welcome to a star-studded and poignant tribute to Georg Riedel, one of the greatest musicians and composers of Swedish jazz. Radiojazzgruppen’s Nisse Landgren hosts the evening and pianist Calle Bagge conducts a house band featuring elite members of the Swedish jazz scene, as well as vocalists including Nicolai Dunger and Sarah Riedel.With the passing on 25 February this year of jazz bassist, composer and arranger Georg Riedel at 90 years of age, one of the most versatile composers of Swedish music fell silent.Georg Riedel composed music for Astrid Lindgren’s films, as well as innovative jazz for Radiojazzgruppen and his own duos, trios and quartets. His oeuvre includes opera, orchestral works and music for films, ballet and church services. He is among the musicians who brought Swedish folk music to jazz stages. Jazz på Svenska (“Jazz in Swedish”), his album with Jan Johansson, is the most sold Swedish jazz album.To celebrate this doyen of jazz, Stockholm Jazz Festival presents a full evening at Stockholm Konserthuset, in which a wide selection of Riedel’s compositions will be performed by carefully selected artists – many of whom worked with the man himself over the past 20 years. This retrospective of Riedel’s work will link the golden age of the 1950s to contemporary jazz of the 2020s.“Georg Riedel’s contribution is utterly massive, and so is the empty space he has left behind. The concerts focus on a particular subject or composer, amalgamating music and poetry. Texts, biographical information, poetry and background information on the evening’s unifying theme combine to produce a unique experience for the audience.

Jan Lundgren is one of our foremost musicians, and with around fifty CDs and a range of projects and collaborations, he has consistently shown his ability to embrace tradition while always evolving. Each year, Jan Lundgren presents three concerts under the banner Kind of Jazz – unique meetings with invited artists and ensembles. Kind of Jazz 2025 marks the series’ seventh season.“The title Chamber Jazz signals an intimate way of making music together, and this time there will be no drums,” says Jan Lundgren. “For the first time, I’ll be working with American cornetist Warren Vaché, who is considered one of the greats today and one of the few still active who has played with legends like Benny Goodman. Warren’s roots are in the swing era of the 1940s, with early influences such as Roy Eldridge and Bobby Hackett. The Great American Songbook will be central, and we’ll definitely include something by Duke Ellington.”Joining Jan Lundgren and Warren Vaché are two of Denmark’s finest jazz musicians: guitarist Jacob Fischer – “we’ve played together in many settings since the 1990s; he’s a true musician’s musician,” and bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk, “arguably Denmark’s top bassist and a successor to the great Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.”Note: The cornet is similar to the trumpet but is slightly more compact and has a warmer sound.

“World Jazz” is the theme of this concert – because the performers come from very different countries: Swedish pianist Joel Lyssarides and American drummer Hamid Drake meet Greek musician Georgios Prokopiou, a virtuoso on the long-necked lute bouzouki, as well as Moroccan gimbri player Majid Bekkas and French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê. The five musicians, who are at home both in the traditional music of their respective homelands and in jazz, unite the most diverse musical influences on this evening to create a sound that spans the globe.

The eventful biography of Georg Friedrich Händel from Halle, who died in London on 14 April 1759, resembles the lives of jazz legends, and the richness of his music invites jazz interpretation. The Berlin pianist Rolf Zielke arranges impressions from the music of various Handel compositions for the unusual instrumentation of this evening. A promising undertaking: Handel's music, characterised by baroque joie de vivre, meets the rhythmic sensuality of South America and the sparkling joy of playing of this rousing jazz ensemble. Rolf Zielke's arrangements shed new light - full of respect - on Handel's original music. **** It's hard to believe: in May 2025, the jazz festival will take place in the Tischlerei for the 5th time and illustrious programmes and stars of the jazz scene will join forces. Experience Handel's music as the perfect template for improvised jazz (5, 6 May). The fantastic guitarist Josho Stephan plays a tribute to Django Reinhardt (7, 8 May), the unforgettable songs that originated on the Motown Records label are interpreted by Worthy Davis on 9 May and Mette Nadja Hansen lends her voice and bends her knee to the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald and The Count (10, 11 May). Two concerts for children aged between 4 and 7 about the "magic dragon Mo", the first trumpet dragon in Pyromania, will conclude the festival on 11 and 12 May.

The famous pianist Herbie Hancock says, »Jazz has an inclusive spirit,« and that applies to the workshop »Kosmos Jazz« as well: participants don’t need any musical knowledge; they get to know some typical jazz instruments in a relaxed atmosphere, have the chance to try them out, and play their first piece of jazz together at the end. Please note: this workshop is aimed at families with children aged six and above. Children younger than six may not participate in this workshop. All participants need a ticket.
