Rihm and Stockhausen’s first meeting took place in the summer of 1972. Stockhausen, 24 years his senior, had already seen a lot of talented young people, but was quite taken with Wolfgang Rihm and his youthful self-confidence when he applied for his composition class at the age of barely twenty. And so Rihm, who had been taking professional composition lessons for a long time, regularly travelled from his new home in Cologne to Kürten, 25 km away, where the master held his classes. He would later say that this time was a time of self-discovery and self-examination as a composer.

musica viva is celebrating Wolfgang Rihm’s 70th birthday with a week of concerts. Since the 1970s, when he burst upon Germany’s music scene as an enfant terrible, Rihm has embodied the unconditionality of the creative act. It is thus no accident that his 1978 essay on pain and pleasure bore the title Ins eigene Fleisch (“mortifying the flesh”) and dealt with the close bond between mind and body. The same applies to the quintet studies he wrote for composer-clarinettist Jörg Widmann, his former student and perhaps even his soul-mate, who will present them with soloists from the BRSO in Munich’s recital hall.

This also applies to the Fifth Symphony, which Bruckner called his “contrapuntal masterpiece” because of its ingenious compositional technique. Kirill Petrenko combines it with a work that also has a connection to sacred architecture: Wolfgang Rihm’s IN-SCHRIFT, whose dark, powerfully-sculpted sounds are inspired by St Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

The Leonkoro Quartet has enjoyed a meteoric rise to success. Founded in 2019, the ensemble is already at home on international concert stages, making its celebrated Philharmonie debut in February 2024. “The Leonkoro Quartet’s risk-conscious power of intensity is legendary. Its virtuosity is unbelievably natural,” wrote the Tagesspiegel afterwards. The young musicians return this season – with an energetic string quartet by our composer in residence Wolfgang Rihm, who died in July of this year, a wonderfully melodic opus by Felix Mendelssohn, and a key work from Beethoven’ s late oeuvre.

The String Quintet in F major is the only major chamber music work by Anton Bruckner, whose 200th birthday will be celebrated in 2024. The Philharmonic String Quartet and Amihai Grosz, principal violist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, present the piece in this concert. The evening will open with Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Second String Quartet, which has a distinctive Viennese lilt. A constant in this season’s Philharmonic Chamber Music concerts is the music of our composer in residence Wolfgang Rihm. Here you can hear his dark, finely-spun Grave, written in memory of violist Thomas Kakuska.
