Even the great Thomas Mann was incredibly impressed, writing a letter of thanks to the composer, referring to him as »the man who, as I believe, expresses the art of our time in its profoundest and most sacred form.« To this day, performances of Mahler’s Eighth remain a rare spectacle. After all, it is not every day that you have top ensembles like the Prague Philharmonic Choir, the Rundfunkchor Berlin, the NDR Vokalensemble, the Knabenchor Hannover and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra come together with a first-class octet of soloists! And it is not everywhere that the stage can accommodate everyone, but this is no problem in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall. Any talk about Gustav Mahler’s monumental vocal symphony No. 8 features one superlative after another: the commonly used nickname »Symphony of a Thousand« – not of the composer’s invention, incidentally – already points the way. Mahler himself called his biggest-scale work »the greatest thing I have ever written«, and he certainly wasn’t just referring to the huge body of some 500 participants, which includes several choirs, a huge orchestra and eight soloists. First and foremost, the composer was aiming at a tremendously high intellectual and religious level with this symphony. He chose to set two weighty texts to music: the holiest piece in all German national literature, the closing scene from Goethe’s »Faust« Part II, and the venerable Whitsun hymn »Veni, creator spiritus«. The premiere on 12 September 1910 was an overwhelming success. The writer Thomas Mann was deeply impressed, and sent the composer a letter expressing his gratitude for »embodying, as I see it, the most earnest and sacred artistic will of our time«. To this day, performances of Mahler’s Eighth come close to a spectacle – after all, it’s not every day that you can hear top ensembles like the Prague Philharmonic Choir, the Berlin Radio Choir, the NDR Vokalensemble, the Hanover Boys’ Choir and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra all at once, with a top-class octet of soloists added for good measure! And they don’t all fit on to the stage everywhere… But this is not a problem at the Elbphilharmonie, where star conductor Semyon Bychkov, after his acclaimed readings of the Third Symphony with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, now continues his Mahler series with the greatest work in the Classical-Romantic repertoire.

Their mutual history goes back a long way: the first concert given by the Czech Philharmonic, which was founded in 1896 by musicians of the Prague National Theatre, was conducted by no lesser figure than Antonín Dvořák. It goes without saying that the programme featured works by the composer’s himself, who had just returned from America. And it was Dvořák’s wealth of melody and his orchestral creativity that produced the traditional soft sound cultivated by this top ensemble. So tonight we hear a showpiece programme which marks the Czech Philharmonic’s return to ProArte this season. In the midst of nature the audience can hear birdsong and get to know nature lover Dvořák, who was fond of working in his garden with a straw hat on, and used to go for long hikes with a water bottle in his backpack. His highly sophisticated Violin Concerto shows his talent for marvellous melodies, while the cleverly designed Eighth Symphony is a classic example of this brilliant composition’s rich imagination. One couldn’t present the Czech national composer any better than this!

The founding concert of the Czech Philharmonic in 1896 was conducted by no less a figure than Antonín Dvořák. Ever since then, the tradition-rich Prague-based orchestra has been known for its warm Bohemian sound. Under its chief conductor Semyon Bychkov, the orchestra now dedicates a programme to the great Bohemian Dvořák. In addition to the much-loved symphony »From the New World«, they also perform his only piano concerto, played by Sir András Schiff. For the Hungarian master pianist, the 1876 work is »a wonderful concerto, conceived in the best symphonic tradition of Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms.« In it, however, the soloist does not function as a leading actor, but instead forms a glorious unit with the orchestra. The second main work is Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, which was composed during his time in America. The symphony borrows from African-American spirituals and also contains references to the music of his distant Bohemian homeland.
