Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem is said to be one of the most beautiful and moving sacred pieces of the 20th century. Composed in 1947, the work was born out of fascination with traditional choral music, but it shows no dearth of a “symphonic” scope, simultaneously being deeply reflective in its character. Elements of the Gregorian chant interwoven with modern harmonisation and subtle orchestration create a uniquely contemplative atmosphere and encourage one to slow down in the October rush of preparations for All Souls’ Day. Sol per te / The most beautiful operas by Georg Friedrich Händel

“Sol per te” is the most famous love duet between Flavia and Lepido from Georg Friedrich Händel's opera Silla – and just one of the many famous duets by the master of the genre – which will be performed this evening by outstanding female soloists: Olga Pasiecznik and Anna Radziejewska with Early Instrument Ensemble of the Polish Royal Opera Capella Regia Polona. In the emotional Io t'abbraccio from the opera Rodelinda, the title character confesses her feelings for Bertarid, as do Cleopatra and Caesar in Caro! Bella! from the opera Giulio Cesare, while in the dramatic duet Per le porte dell tormento, Rosmene and Tirinto confront turbulent passions in the opera Imeneo. This last one Händel wrote humorously, in the style of a musical comedy, in which he treated the dramatic dilemmas between heart and duty with a wink. This, in turn, influenced the music, balancing pathos and playfulness, which is rare in Händel's operas. The Bonds Between Music, Homeland and Diaspora

What influences your own music-making? Which cultural roots play a role and how can you express yourself in music – especially when you live far away in the diaspora? These are questions about which the singer Ramadu and dancer, DJ and author Jumoke Adeyanju exchange views in order to jam together afterwards. Ramadu is the stage name of Dumisani Moyo. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, he lived in Vienna for a long time and now promotes the musical culture of his homeland. This season, he is developing one of the Elbphilharmonie join-in ensembles with the Chor zur Welt, a programme about the varied a cappella music in Southern Africa. He will be part of this panel discussion a few days before the concerts on 30 June. With Jumoke Adeyanju as his discussion partner, he faces a multi-disciplinary artist, who also studied African-/Asian Studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin and completed a Masters in African Politics in London. Musa Okwonga, who likewise works in London as an author and musician as well as a radio presenter, moderates.

“It is the best thing I have written in my life”, declared Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1784 of his piano quintet. Many of his most famous works had not yet been written, but the quintet remains a Mozartian jewel, with its melodic beauty and charming dialogues between the instruments. It is no wonder that the young Ludwig van Beethoven was inspired by Mozart’s example to write an equally enchanting quintet. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker play both works with pianist Kit Armstrong. Contemporary counterpoints are provided in the form of wind quintets by Hans Werner Henze and Wolfgang Rihm.

100 years of BDLO Federal Association of Amateur Music Symphony and Chamber Orchestras

The State Association of North German Amateur Orchestras celebrates the 100th anniversary of the BDLO Federal Association of Amateur Music Symphony and Chamber Orchestras with Mahler’s »Resurrection Symphony«. To this day, performances of Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony are an impressive event - not only in Hamburg, where the composer once had the inspiration for the choral finale in the Michel. Together, the Gustav Mahler Association Hamburg, which has set itself the task of raising public awareness of the composer and the traditional music association, founded a project orchestra and choir especially for this concert, bringing the work of the century to the Laeiszhalle to mark the anniversary.
