SaitenWind Trio

The SaitenWind Trio combines the flute, the clarinet and the guitar into an unusual ensemble that calls for unusual programmes. The trio’s concerts feature own compositions, arrangements and even texts and poetry that are carefully tailored to suit the music in each case. The three musicians have a wide stylistic range, from Baroque music to the tango.

Who hasn’t dreamed of travelling back in time? What would you want to change? – But aren’t such thoughts actually purely fictional? Well, from a scientific point of view, time travel is actually not impossible! Even more: they have long been possible! However, only in a very specific respect, namely when it comes to travelling through or into history. Preserved historical artefacts, such as documents, books and music, are generally the sources of our knowledge of the past. Not infrequently, such research can then shed new light on the present. Or, for example, broaden the present spectrum of sound ideas. Like, for example, the two pieces of music from the late period of the long 19th century quasi rediscovered by the Bawandi Trio and freshly recorded on CD.

The versatile award-winning composer and pianist Kirill Richter, who was already enthusiastically celebrated in the ProArte X series in 2019, is not considered one of the most exciting contemporary artists in Europe for nothing, as he succeeds like no other in combining form and emotion, magical sounds and fragility in his music. The young Russian has been working with his trio for many years, which is evident in the perfect harmony with which the three artists interact on stage. A highlight not to be missed!

Lisa Butzlaff (flute), Fedor Erfurt (bass clarinet) and Natalya Klem (piano) cultivate the fine tradition of stylish salon and café music, charmingly and sophisticatedly presented in the best tradition of the »Palm Court« trio. In the (pre-)Christmas concert, the trio serves up a star-studded menu with an exquisite selection of fine classical music and salon music highlights. Swinging waltz melodies from the Strauss dynasty, spicy Hungarian appetisers such as »Eljen a Magyar« or Brahms’ »Hungarian Dances«, variations of unforgotten character pieces, Viennese songs, evergreens refined with the crème de la crème of salon music such as »Salut d’Amour«. Astor Piazzolla revolutionised the tango. His music is no longer dance music, but concert music. He himself said: »I am a tango man. But my music makes people think – those who love tango and those who listen to good music.« The famous French music teacher Nadia Boulanger, with whom he studied in Paris in the 1950s, gave him the self-confidence and courage to tread this new path and develop tango nuevo. The Argentinian bandoneonist Omar Massa and the Boulanger Trio met a few years ago in Berlin. Right from their first meeting, a strong synergy developed between them. Their music fuses the European chamber music tradition with the authentic sound of Buenos Aires. Just like Astor Piazzolla under the influence of Nadia Boulanger, they bring Tango Nuevo into the 21st century with Omar Massa’s own compositions. A spectacular encounter full of passion and energy!

»This trio is incredibly well matched, and you can tell how much they trust each other« was BBC Radio’s recent verdict on the Sitkovetsky Trio, which was formed in 2007. And on top of that, the Sitkovetsky Trio has really developed an exceptional quality over the years. They are joined here by the Andalusian clarinettist Pablo Barragán, who loves telling stories with his nuanced and richly coloured playing – e.g. in Olivier Messiaen’s »Quartet for the End of Time«. By the time he completed and gave the first performance of the »Quatuor pour la fin du temps«, as it is known in the original, in the Görlitz prisoner-of-war camp in 1941, the French composer had already spent many months in captivity. The piece’s unusual combination of instruments is simply a reflection of who was incarcerated with Messiaen and what instruments they could play; Messiaen himself took the piano part. Today, the quartet is acknowledged as one of the central chamber-music works of the 20th century. Marked through and through by the composer’s deep Catholic faith, the music is closely linked to the book of Revelations in the Bible. Messiaen himself described the work in these words: »The motifs bring the listener closer to eternity. Special rhythms without any conventional metre push the dimension of time into the distance. The quartet has eight movements. Why? Seven is the consummate number. God spent six days creating the world, sanctified by the divine Sabbath; the seventh day expands into eternity and becomes the eighth day of inextinguishable light and everlasting peace.« Surrounded by the horrors of the Second World War, Messiaen’s faith enabled him not to lose hope. French works – a duo and a trio – are also under the spotlight before the interval: Claude Debussy’s »Première Rhapsodie« for piano and clarinet follows Maurice Ravel’s only piano trio, written in 1914 while he was staying in the Basque region. In addition to local Basque influence, the composer also incorporated echoes of Malaysian music into the work, reflecting the fashion around the turn of the century forte »exotic«.The score also shows how Ravel was horrified by the outbreak of the First World War. He wrote to a friend: »The alarms bells have been ringing for two days, everywhere women are weeping, and worst of all is the excruciating enthusiasm amongst young people!«.

The horrors of the First World War have often been described in literature. Books such as Erich Maria Remarque’s »All Quiet on the Western Front« speak of the brutality of trench warfare and the deadening effect of being surrounded by death. However, there are also more optimistic accounts, such as the Christmas truce when enemies laid down their weapons and sang carols together. With his legendary baritone voice, Thomas Quasthoff reads from First World War letters and diaries. In alternation, the award-winning young Amatis Piano Trio performs excerpts from the Romantic and modern chamber music repertoire, reflecting the mood of the individual texts. Young soldiers of various nationalities are represented, as are relatives writing to the front from back home. The texts bear witness to the barbarism of war, and to youthful blue-eyed enthusiasm turning into disillusionment and horror in the face of the bloody reality. But they also reveal humanity and mutual respect – even between enemies. The stories speak of individual fates and give a face to the bare figures. They are accompanied by slow movements from piano trios by composers such as Schubert and Shostakovich, who composed his Piano Trio No. 2 while mourning the death of a friend in the Second World War. Works such as Korngold’s »Dogberry and Verges – March of the Watch«, which caricature the initial enthusiasm of young soldiers for war, lighten the mood.
