René Jacobs, a Haydn conductor, expresses his admiration for Haydn's "Cecilia Mass," calling it the most magnificent and artistic among Haydn's masses. The exact date of the mass's creation is undocumented, and the title, referring to the patron saint of church music, isn't Haydn's own. Jacobs performs the mass with the Basel Chamber Orchestra and a select vocal quartet.

Conductor René Jacobs revolutionised the sound of this opera with his recording of Mozart’s »Idomeneo«. In so doing, he says very modestly: »The only thing I want to do with Mozart’s works is to read them as if they were new.« The Freiburger Barockorchester was also involved at that time, likewise an eminent authority in historical performance practice, which enthrallingly illustrates the story about the power of love, destiny and ancient gods in this concert performance as well. The opera characters do not accept their fate and wrestle with their feelings: the king and father Idomeneo, who in accordance with God’s will is supposed to sacrifice his son Idamante. This very son, who is in love with Ilia, the daughter of his enemy. And Ilia, who is also in love, but believes Idamante already in the clutches of her jealous rival Elettra. Mozart and his librettist take the ancient material into their time of enlightenment and, in the end, let love, humanity and reason prevail. »Idomeneo« is an excellent opera – musically modern and full of arias, which sensitively interpret the emotions of the characters. The choir, which as the people of Crete gives lively commentary on the action, sung here by the Zürcher Singakademie, is weightier than in other Mozart operas. Only created in 2011, it has become a reliable partner for René Jacobs. The line-up of soloists completes the evening with great voices, all of them experienced Mozart interpreters.

With their warm and clear choral sound, Voces Suaves bring century-old works to life. And it is often cause for goosebumps from the very first tones. For their performance at the Hamburg International Music Festival, the singers devote their attention to a collection of choral works by Claudio Monteverdi. Specialising in solo performances in the repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the Baroque, Voces Suaves have a reputation as one of the most outstanding early music ensembles for good reason. This time around they in Hamburg with a first-class group of instrumentalists in tow: Like Voces Suaves, the Capricornus Consort Basel was founded at the legendary Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In keeping with the theme of the music festival, »War and Peace«, the two renowned ensembles perform Monteverdi‘s enchanting »Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi« (Madrigals of War and Love). The Italian composer stands on the cusp between the Renaissance and the Baroque with his expressive musical language. In this collection of non-ecclesiastical songs, he juxtaposes dramatic soundscapes of war with atmospheric songs about love and passion.

The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra was formed in 1955, since when its rich history has included many notable achievements. Even after the merger with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985, the ensemble lost none of its unique identity. The dynamics between the members of the orchestra are particularly striking. They rarely play under the baton of a conductor but interact with each other almost instinctively. There is a remarkable chemistry, as is apparent during every performance. Gordan Nikolić has been the leader, or ‘concertmaster’, of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra since 2004.
