The Basel Chamber Orchestra, known for its exceptional concert experiences, returns to Freiburg with a program featuring Sibelius' Andante festivo, Brahms' Symphony No. 3, and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. Yulianna Avdeeva, winner of the 2010 Warsaw Chopin Competition, makes her Freiburg debut performing Beethoven's concerto. Conducted by Marc Minkowski, the orchestra's performance promises a unique blend of captivating ensemble sound and individual artistry.

René Jacobs, a Haydn conductor, expresses his admiration for Haydn's "Cecilia Mass," calling it the most magnificent and artistic among Haydn's masses. The exact date of the mass's creation is undocumented, and the title, referring to the patron saint of church music, isn't Haydn's own. Jacobs performs the mass with the Basel Chamber Orchestra and a select vocal quartet.

For their performance at the Hamburg International Music Festival, the singers devote their attention to a collection of choral works by Claudio Monteverdi. Specialising in solo performances in the repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the Baroque, Voces Suaves have a reputation as one of the most outstanding early music ensembles for good reason. This time around they in Hamburg with a first-class group of instrumentalists in tow: Like Voces Suaves, the Capricornus Consort Basel was founded at the legendary Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In keeping with the theme of the music festival, »War and Peace«, the two renowned ensembles perform Monteverdi‘s enchanting »Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi« (Madrigals of War and Love). The Italian composer stands on the cusp between the Renaissance and the Baroque with his expressive musical language. In this collection of non-ecclesiastical songs, he juxtaposes dramatic soundscapes of war with atmospheric songs about love and passion.

A servant tricks a nobleman: even in the arts, such a thing was practically a call for revolution in 1786. And yet the title character of Mozart’s opera »Le nozze di Figaro« was allowed to take his employer Count Almaviva for a full ride on the stage of the Vienna Court Opera that very year and end up making a real fool of himself. The Emperor himself had authorised the performance after Mozart had played him a few pieces from the new opera: he was evidently just as unable to resist the pull of the wonderful music as the audience, who still celebrate the opera as one of Mozart’s absolute masterpieces to this day. At the Elbphilharmonie, the performance of this brilliant work by Mozart specialist Giovanni Antonini with his Basel Chamber Orchestra and a top-class line-up of soloists promises nothing less than a masterly performance.

Giovanni Antonini conducts Mozart and Haydn

Few people are as passionate about the music of Joseph Haydn as Giovanni Antonini. He is currently in the process of recording all 107 of the composer’s symphonies – with a fresh, arresting approach. In this concert, we hear two symphonies of captivating originality and inspiration. Also on the programme are the cantata Arianna a Naxos, a touching emotional drama of an abandoned woman featuring Egyptian soprano Fatma Said, and Mozart’s little-known incidental music Thamos, King in Egypt, which is impressive in its dramatic power.
