Maria Schneider / Oslo Jazz Ensemble

Tue, Mar 11, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Oslo Jazz Ensemble, Maria Schneider (Director)
Already once planned for 2022, the tail end of the Covid pandemic thwarted the wanderlust of Maria Schneider. But postponed is not cancelled: now, the American composer and bandleader presents her ninth album »Data Lords«, which was just awarded two Grammys. Maria Schneider stands for jazz compositions in cinemascope format, for profound, superbly arranged works with the Oslo Jazz Ensemble alongside her this time, for its part a powerhouse of Norwegian jazz creativity. »Data Lords«, this is something like the catapult handmade by David with which Maria Schneider as a resistant, seemingly powerless warrior flings a couple of shiny prepared cannonballs of sound against the Goliath of the tech and music industry. In the USA, the composer is a powerful voice for copyright protection and for the fair payment of musicians in times of streaming services. The music of her ninth album also carries this fighting spirit within it, which she released, as ever, entirely on her own.

Vinicio Capossela / Special Guest: Suonno D’Ajere

Fri, Nov 22, 2024, 21:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Vinicio Capossela (Vocals), Vinicio Capossela (Piano), Vinicio Capossela (Guitar), Vinicio Capossela (Accordion), Raffaele Tiseo (Violin), Raffaele Tiseo (Keyboards), Daniela Savoldi (Cello), Michele Vignali (Saxophon), Alessandro Stefana (Guitar), Andrea Lamacchia (Double bass), Piero Perelli (Drums), Irene Scarpato (Vocals), Gian Marco Libeccio (Guitar), Marcello Smigliante Gentile (Mandolin)
According to myth, Naples was founded on the beach where the siren Parthenope was washed ashore. Vinicio Capossela traces this legend in his programme »Parthenope and other Sirens. From port to port«. Accompanied by his ensemble at the »Viva Napoli« festival, he sings about the beguiling mythical creatures in his incomparable way, with ingenious lyrics and catchy music. Instead of limiting himself to one genre, he combines Italian folk music, tango and fado with rock and pop, sings ballads, love songs and shanties. For him, sirens are also songs that wander from port to port and bring different cultures into dialogue: Mediterranean flair meets Nordic freshness. Suonno D’Ajere adds to Capossela’s show a Neapolitan touch with its ensemble made of three instruments dialoguing and humoring each other, running in countertempo through a sought-after repertoire of genres: from serenata to »tear-jerking« song, from macchietta to unpublished composition. Please note: Enzo Avitabile has unfortunately had to cancel the concert for reasons of ill health. The Italian singer Vinicio Capossela is performing instead. Tickets remain valid, but can also be returned. Ticket purchasers and subscribers to »Around the World« has been informed of the change by email.

JazzKLUB / Soojin Suh Coloris Trio / The Korean jazz concept

Tue, Nov 12, 2024, 19:30
Jaehun Kang, Hoo Kim (Double bass), Soojin Suh (Drums)
The world first learned about the Korean drummer’s talent from the Near East Quartet albums published under the ECM label. In the case of her trio, far from jazz purism, a good point of reference would be the more ambitious recordings by the Bad Plus band, minus their propensity for showiness. The pieces dedicated to Herbie Nichols and Andrew Hill also shed light on the directions of the leader’s creative explorations. In Suh’s compositions, the aggressive, mathematical ostinatos of the piano neighbour a lyrical minimalism. The interchangeability of the functions necessitates a departure from the label of piano trio and a move towards calling the ensemble a drums-bass-piano trio. Soojin Suh’s playing lends the music a nerve, simultaneously being saturated with colurs, her drumming gestures resembling sudden brushstrokes. On some albums, the artist reaches for her native traditions, using the geomungo or inviting a pansori-style singer. This time, the reference to the Korean heritage is subtle and philosophical – in the trio’s music, we can find an implementation of the „breath of the melody”, an old Korean aesthetic of sound.
