Does the cello have so many fans because it is most similar to the human voice? At least that's what cellists like to say about their instrument, which became the new star in string heaven during the Romantic period. Since the Baroque era, the violin had been the undisputed queen, with the cello relegated to the continuo with the double bass. Antonín Dvořák also had to make friends with the cello, which was sometimes derided as a “sorrow box” due to its pronounced melancholic qualities. As a guest in the USA, he finally wrote a great dance-like concerto for the instrument, which became a favorite piece from his pen around the world, rich in melody and virtuoso. The family concert title “Hello Cello!” is a greeting with which we and our audience aged 8 and over welcome artist in residence Sheku Kanneh-Mason, his wonderful instrument and the Dvořák concert. And an exclamation of surprised admiration: Hello - what this cello can do!
This family concert celebrates the joys of the Christmas season with music by Shostakovich, Barber, Vaughan Williams, and others. It evokes the atmosphere of Christmas markets, gingerbread, roasted almonds, singing, bells, and snowy landscapes.

This exhibition promises a diverse experience, blending visual art with music by Modest Mussorgsky, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. The music transports us to France, Poland, and Ukraine, introducing characters like playing children, a dwarf, a witch, and intriguing locations such as an old castle and a hut on chicken legs. Even unhatched chicks make an appearance, creating a feast for the senses.
Time is a mystery: invisible yet tangible, unstoppable yet elusive. Adults claim to never have enough, but children like Momo, Beppo, and Gigi resist the pressure. Explore this in "Playing with Time," a family concert featuring music from Telemann, Pärt, Ibert, Bach, Bartók, and Takemitsu. For ages 7+. €5 for children, €15 for adults.
Music is like time, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Its tempo can be steady like a heartbeat or expansive like the universe. In this concert, we journey through the vastness of space, across seasons and time, until we arrive in the present moment.

In March 2025, the Galakutschensaal will resonate with a special sound experience for kindergarten children and families. Children will dive into sound worlds, exciting stories, become rhythm researchers, and discover melodies. Participation and singing are just as important as listening attentively. Together with students from the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music Berlin and the Jazz Institute Berlin, children will explore all facets of music, get to know instruments, relax on cushions, or dance around the room.
