Robert Schumann's only opera is among the most unconventional and important music dramas of the Romantic period. The original sound ensemble Le Cercle de l'Harmonie and its founder Jérémie Rhorer now reveal the astonishing modernity of this masterpiece. The knowledgeable conductor and his special ensemble, Genoveva, tell the story of Siegfried, Count Palatine's wife who is falsely accused of infidelity by his vassal. Schumann's opera, which has a happy ending, thrives on an unheard-of inner tension.

Der britische Shooting-Star Sheku Kanneh-Mason präsentiert sich mit Saint-Saëns’ elegantem Cellokonzert an der Seite des London Philharmonic Orchestra mit Chefdirigent Edward Gardner.Seine beispiellose Karriere nahm ihren Lauf, als er erst als Überraschungssieger aus der Fernsehshow »Britain’s Got Talent« hervorging und schließlich bei der royalen Hochzeit von Prinz Harry und Meghan Markle ein Millionenpublikum begeisterte. Nicht unbedingt der übliche Weg für einen jungen Absolventen der Royal Academy of Music ... Dabei ist der sympathische Musiker und Fußballliebhaber bodenständig und nahbar geblieben, musiziert ebenso gern mit seinen sechs Geschwistern wie mit den weltbesten Orchestern. Dem London Philharmonic Orchestra zum Beispiel, das in diesem Konzert das romantische Programm um Rachmaninows dritte Sinfonie ergänzt.

Spannende Begegnung in Köln: Wenn Karina Canellakis und Anne-Sophie Mutter zum ersten Mal gemeinsam auf Tournee sind, werden die musikalischen Funken fliegen. »Ich habe schon öfter Konzerte von ihr besucht, sie ist eine tolle Musikerin«, sagt die Spitzengeigerin über die amerikanische Dirigentin.Und über sich selbst: »Wenn Sie mich kennenlernen wollen, müssen Sie mich auf der Bühne erleben«. Ihr Leben von der Musik zu trennen? Unmöglich. Ihr Credo: Klassische Musik gehört in den Alltag, in die Mitte der Gesellschaft. Mit Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowsky hätte sie sich in diesem Punkt gut verstanden. Musik war ihm Zufluchtsort und Lebenselixier. Sein grandioses Violinkonzert entstand in schwerer Zeit und wurde seine Lebensrettung: »In solchem Gemütszustand verliert das Schaffen gänzlich das Gepräge der Arbeit; es ist reinste Seligkeit!«

Daniel Harding conducts Holst’s “Planets”

With Gustav Holst’s atmospheric 1916 orchestral suite The Planets, Daniel Harding embarks on a cosmic musical journey through our solar system. Each of the seven planets has its own musical character, from rugged Mars to mystical Neptune. Holst was greatly inspired by Arnold Schoenberg’s Five Orchestral Pieces, which oscillate intriguingly between late Romanticism and Modernism. Completing the programme, Brett Dean’s Komarov’s Fall was commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2006 as a musical “asteroid” to Holst’s Planets.
