Florian Verweij explores Paris: Roger-Ducasse, Boulanger, Fauré and Franck

Tue, Nov 12, 2024, 20:15
Florian Verweij (Piano)
Florian Verweij (1997) explores four composers who charted their musical paths in Paris around 1900. As a pianist with a passion for composers who linger in the shadows of music history, he brings to light the music of Debussy’s colleague Jean Roger-Ducasse. Florian: ‘Roger-Ducasse was a true composer for the piano and wrote intense and intoxicating music with multicoloured harmonies.’ He also performs a work by Lili Boulanger, who died tragically at 24. ‘Her Thème et variations sweeps you into an endless fever dream.’ The evening is rounded out with music by their mentor Gabriel Fauré and the nestor of the French music scene, César Franck. With his successful debut in the Recital Hall in 2023, Florian Verweij demonstrated his poetic piano playing and sensitive storytelling. ‘He played with a sense of heroism and nobility... technically, the Dutch pianist’s performance was exceptionally strong,’ wrote music magazine De Nieuwe Muze. Florian Verweij studied with Jan Wijn and Naum Grubert and completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees with the highest distinction at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. His debut album will be released with the Amsterdam label Gutman Records in November 2024.

Another highlight: Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, which captures a range of moods from tranquil morning calm to wild and grotesque dances and melancholic longing for love. The atmospheric Intermezzo by Ukrainian composer Borys Lyatoshynsky opens the programme.

Fauré and Norman

Sun, Oct 6, 2024, 15:00
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Jenny Eklund (Violin), Henrik Peterson (Violin), Nicholas Shardlow (Viola), Klas Gagge (Cello), Kiyo Wada (Piano)
Ludvig Norman was one of the great musical personalities of his time. With his three symphonies and an equal number of overtures, he is the greatest Swedish symphonist of the 19th century after Franz Berwald. He also wrote excellent chamber music, including a series of string quartets, such as this vital and expressive A minor quartet.Fauré's music ranges from light salon music to a musical romanticism that points forward to the music of the 20th century. He is best known for his meditative Requiem, but he also composed a wealth of chamber music: solo sonatas, songs, and a series of brilliant piano works. The first piano quintet encompasses both romantic melody and sparkling French sounds.Louise Héritte-Viardot (1841–1918) was, like Fauré, a Parisian. She was a singer, pianist, and composer who wrote both orchestral works and chamber music. This lively piano quartet was a great success and is often called "the Spanish" because of the Spanish titles of the movements – such as the first movement's Paseo, a Spanish dance.

Strings from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, reinforced by guest cellist Andreas Lavotha, form a quartet and perform together with the orchestra's pianist Stefan Lindgren two truly magnificent piano quintets, by Dmitri Shostakovich and Dora Pejačević.Shostakovich's quintet was composed against a dark backdrop, in the war year of 1940. The music, full of contrasts and surprising twists, depicts tragicomic scenes, musical flashbacks, and hopeful gestures. It is one of his most famous and beloved chamber music works.Dora Pejačević's piano quintet is powerful with its dense harmonies and beautiful melodies – it is a highlight in her oeuvre. Dora Pejačević was born in Hungary, and her mother was Hungarian, but her father was a Croatian nobleman, and therefore she became part of the Croatian nobility around the turn of the last century.

Jansen and Kozhukhin

Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 15:00
Janine Jansen (Violin), Denis Kozhukhin (Piano)
With her dazzling technique and natural stage presence, Dutch violinist Janine Jansen has long been among the top tier of international star violinists. Pianist Denis Kozhukhin also combines outstanding technique with mature musicality and an ability to establish a close connection with the audience. They have both previously visited Konserhuset, individually and together.During their acclaimed visit in 2022, they performed, among other pieces, Brahms' third violin sonata. Now, we hear the first two: the "rain sonata," so named because its finale includes a quote from Brahms' own song "Regenlied," and the second, named "Thun" after the town in Switzerland where Brahms spent time when he composed it. There, he was inspired by the beautiful surroundings. "There are so many melodies here that one must be careful not to trample on any of them," he expressed it.Before Ravel's concluding violin sonata with its famous blues movement, we hear Eugène Ysaÿe's sensually dark-toned Poème élégiaque, a milestone in the violin repertoire, and Olivier Messiaen's Thème et variations, which in character resembles his most performed work, Quartet for the End of Time.
