This anniversary program invites you to a Hindemith-style birthday celebration: with music, unusual and rich, playful and provocative, from mature and young wild days - in any case by Hindemith. The modernist pioneer from Hanau turned away from the cult of genius and the confessional nature of romanticism in favor of a "new objectivity," which included parodistic features, quotations, and playing with popular genres. Four sonatas for viola, oboe, and cello—with, without, or even just for piano—as well as an unconventional serenade, can be experienced from Hindemith's rich oeuvre. Music for the chamber at its best!

Ensemble Resonanz dives into the heated events of Bach’s St John Passion and presents its own, intimate version with a chamber-music line-up. The notes remain unchanged, but there is no turba choir. Instead, a guitar and electronic continuo head off together on spheric forays.

With his Fourth Symphony, Brahms left posterity an orchestral monolith, austere and monumental, the sum of his ability as a composer and an expression of radical tradition. In this concert, Brahms’s legacy is juxtaposed with dramatic atmosphere from Locatelli and with Berlioz’s unique piece about the death of Cleopatra, with soprano and Berlioz specialist Véronique Gens in the title role. In this programme the Hamburg-based Ensemble Resonanz combines three composers who broke rules and set standards: Pietro Antonio Locatelli, sometimes regarded as the Paganini of the 18th century, was a lover of effects and dramatic atmosphere taken from the wunderkammer of Baroque instrumental music. Hector Berlioz submitted his bold cantata about the death of Cleopatra for the Prix de Rome, but it was rejected as being too daring. The Symphony No. 4 in E minor is the last symphony from the pen of Johannes Brahms, the sum of his own resources as a composer, and of the entire history of Western composition. Picking up where Bach and Beethoven left off, Brahms recycles material from music history, combining tradition with ideas that are thoroughly innovative. Everything flows here from the outset; the music is a fabric where everything is in motion; all certainty is lost: the Fourth is a complex work that breaks through all manner of formal boundaries.

What traces do wars leave on the music of the time? The Hathor Consort, a viol ensemble of to which harp, organ and cornett are added, joins forces with soprano Dorothee Mields to look for echoes of the Thirty Years’ War in the works of composers who witnessed this catastrophic period in European history. With his »Trostgedichten in Widerwertigkeit deß Kriegs«, the poet Martin Opitz wrote an influential treatise of edification in the midst of this fierce conflict that claimed the lives of around a third of the population. The composers of the age attempted to process the deep trauma of violence, hunger and utter defencelessness through their music. This programme brings together four musical witnesses of the time:Heinrich Schütz, Samuel Scheidt, Andreas Hammerschmidt and Heinrich Albert. The acclaimed Hathor Consort focuses mainly on Renaissance and Baroque music, but it regularly combines this with music from other cultures as well as with contemporary works. Dorothee Mields likewise focuses entirely on Early Music, and her clear and intimate soprano is regarded as one of today’s top voices in the field of historic performing practice.

Why would an ensemble that made its name performing rarities from early and contemporary music then turn to the most successful oratorio of the Baroque? Ensemble Resonanz would presumably answer, »Christmas without the Christmas Oratorio is only half the story. As often as you may have heard or played the piece, you still want to hear or play it again.« The ensemble has been performing its own version of Bach’s Christmas classic for six years now – pared down and with unconventional instrumentation, a little like a concert at home for friends. The concert hall becomes a sitting room, the musicians become a choir, and the work becomes chamber music with Baroque violas, electric guitar and vintage keyboards.

In collaboration with Hamburg director Ron Zimmering, the quartet brings their shared love of Scandinavia to the stage in this scenic-musical programme. With its combination of instruments, it is reminiscent of the classical band Spark, sometimes also of folk music – but with its very own, subtle sound colours .

Even for the state of the art, there are legends – such as the Bang on a Can All-Stars, who are always in search of very up-to-date, exciting music, regardless of genre categories. Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk and Ornette Coleman are just a few of the artists who have already collaborated with the New York collective. For their Elbphilharmonie debut, the musicians have chosen a work by founding member and Pulitzer prizewinner Julia Wolfe, which traces the myth surrounding the American folk hero John Henry as an oratorio between minimal music and country. There are hundreds of versions of this story, passed down by word of mouth and already cast in music many times whether by Johnny Cash, Van Morrison or Bruce Springsteen: at the end of the 19th century, a worker is supposed to have competed against a new kind of steam-driven hammer in railway construction with his muscle strength and won – to pay with his life as a result. Julia Wolfe has composed a meta myth with »Steel Hammer«: »The work is inspired by my love of legends and the music of the Appalachian Mountains. I fragmented the many different and somewhat contradictory versions of the ballad and wove it into a completely new format. The music often circles around individual words or phrases to tell the ultimate story and its different paths.« The Appalachian dulcimer (a kind of zither) joins the usual line-up of Bang on a Can with clarinet, a lot of percussion, guitars, piano, cello and double bass and provides for the American country sound. Trio Mediæval, a top-class a-cappella ensemble from Norway, completes the overall sound with its clear soprano and alto voices, which Julia Wolfe particularly appreciates for their great wealth of experience in the vocal tradition of their homeland.

He has found an ideal ally in Ensemble Resonanz, which also enthusiastically explores innovative and new paths in its concerts, sometimes as the Ensemble in Residence of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and sometimes in the chamber music club it founded itself in the Hamburg district of St Pauli. Together they move through worlds, genres and eras – until they arrive together in the future. In »Silent Woods« by Antonín Dvořák, the leaves rustle in the wind with four celli. »When We Were Trees« by Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima takes us through the seasons in a true sound adventure with a mix of different styles – sometimes classical, sometimes folkloristic, sometimes percussive, sometimes meditative. Kate Moore contributes a new composition for cello and Selaocoe’s voice.

Anyone who delves into George Frideric Handel’s vocal and instrumental music will find a wealth of treasures. Elegance, virtuosity, delicacy – all this can be discovered in an endlessly inventive world of musical expression. In a programme with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and conductor Robin Ticciati, you can experience some of Handel’s most beautiful arias and orchestral pieces from operas and other works. Iestyn Davies, one of the leading countertenors of our time, is the soloist. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a great admirer of Handel. His festive and exuberant “Haffner Symphony” concludes the programme.
