The coolest, most swinging, absolute best jazz songs from the past and in brand new arrangements, composed by and for the band. Some of these hits will resemble the originals – but Fly Me to the Moon may be presented as a ballad, and Summertime might be played as a lightning-fast bebop tune. So don’t count on things being just what you would expect, because that isn’t going to happen.Jazz hits form the foundation of this concert, but there are several not-to-be-missed songs that should have been hits themselves. Some of them will also be included in the programme. It will be swinging, beautiful and grotesque, and dig deep in the mire of the blues; it will sometimes be sweet and cute – and sometimes dark and dreary. But most of all, it will be fun! Some of Sweden’s foremost jazz musicians are welcomed on stage!Read more about Stockholm Swing All Stars (opens in a new window)

Maria Callas, the most famous soprano of all time, is back on everyone’s lips – she would have been 100 in December 2023. A number of new biographies have sought to throw light on her dramatic life, and a film starring Angelina Jolie in the main role is due to be released in 2024. The American playwright Terrence McNally wrote his hit play »Master Class« in 1995. In the fictional story, Callas, after the end of her stage career, begins to teach three young singers, and through that finds herself. In flashbacks, »Master Class« also reflects on the key stages of Maria Callas’s life: her childhood marked by poverty, her dazzling performances at La Scala in Milan, and the destructive relationship with the wealthy business magnate Aristoteles Onassis. As if in passing, the play also features music by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini and Vincenzo Bellini. As part of the Reflektor festival curated by André Heller, the legendary production by the Vienna Volkstheater is now being shown in Hamburg for one time only – starring the actress and singer Andrea Eckert as the merciless, vulnerable diva. A record 170,000 theatregoers saw this production over twelve years. Eckert received numerous awards for her role and was acclaimed as the play’s prima donna assoluta. Please note: This event takes place in German.

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Felix Mendelssohn Jugendorchester, Nane Schulz (Flute), Clemens Malich (Conductor)
The Felix Mendelssohn Jugendorchester (MJO) ends its 50th anniversary season with this concert and starts into the future with »AufWind«. The evening begins with one of the most famous works by Felix Mendelssohn, who was born in Hamburg 225 years ago. Although the wedding march is not played, the overture to the 17-year-old’s Midsummer Night’s Dream shows the fresh wind with which the young Felix sailed into his musical career. This is followed by perhaps the most famous concerto for flute and orchestra by French composer Jacques Ibert. Written in Paris a good 100 years ago, it is full of esprit and charm. The soloist is Nane Schulz, who has been playing in the orchestra since she was 10 years old. Honoured with many national prizes, she is sure to carry her breath into an outstanding career. This year’s great jubilarian is Anton Bruckner. In his marvellous 4th Symphony, the »Romantic«, the brass players in particular will generate a lot of wind to create the monumental blocks of sound in front of you. Reduced-price tickets cost € 15 and are available to young people under 30, the unemployed, welfare recipients, the severely disabled and pensioners. Wheelchair users and accompanying persons can obtain tickets directly from the organiser. Please contactinfo@theyoungclassx.de or 040 414 334 270.

Albert Schweitzer Jugendorchester / Frantz / Beckedorf

Sat, Jun 15, 2024, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Albert Schweitzer Jugendorchester, Caspar Frantz (Piano), Sebastian Beckedorf (Conductor)
Brahms’ first piano concerto in D minor is undoubtedly one of the monumental works of the Romantic piano repertoire and was an important milestone for the young composer on the long road to his first symphony. Initially conceived as a sonata for two pianos in 1854, it took five years before the concerto was premièred in Hanover, with Johannes Brahms himself at the piano. The symphonic poem »Les Preludes« by Franz Liszt was completed in the same year that Brahms began his First Piano Concerto, namely 1854. Although the work always had its critics due to a certain pathetic and overloaded nature, it quickly established itself as one of Franz Liszt’s most important works. The Star Wars Suite for Orchestra by John Williams is more than just a collection of film music; it is a cultural phenomenon that has inspired and continues to fascinate generations of listeners. Its timeless beauty and tonal brilliance make the Star Wars Suite a highlight in the world of film music and an indispensable part of the orchestral literature. As the soloist, Caspar Frantz will take on the piano part. He was already a guest of the Albert Schweitzer Jugendorchester in his youth, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D minor. He is now an internationally renowned pianist and returns to the ASJ with this magnificent piano concerto by the Hamburg composer.

Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester / Ingo Metzmacher

Wed, Aug 28, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, Ingo Metzmacher (Conductor)
»You sometimes need to go against the grain a bit in the music business,« says conductor Ingo Metzmacher. With Beethoven, Shostakovich and Schönberg, he includes three composers on the programme who did just that and wrote music that is still moving and inspiring today. And perhaps this is also an important message to the highly talented youngsters in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, who bring the three revolutionaries to the stage in a young, fresh and certainly a little rebellious way.
