This colorful French program also features America, heard through French ears. Edgard Varèse's 'Amériques,' a massive work for a huge orchestra, uses a siren for the first time in music literature, capturing his childhood vision of America. This America sounds breathtaking, overflowing, exciting. A similar excitement was composed by Claude Debussy at the end of the 19th century in his 'Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,' a sultry and lucid masterpiece.

The Russian composer Vladimir Tarnopolski is certainly no stranger to contemporary music. His works have been performed at many major festivals over recent decades. He has received various prizes and released many of his works on CD. As a professor of composition at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he has also passed on his knowledge to a whole generation of young composers. »Im Dunkel vor der Dämmerung« (»In the Dark before Dawn«) is the title of a new work commissioned by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra and premiered in this concert. »Sinfonia Eroica« was the title Ludwig van Beethoven gave his third symphony in 1804, a »heroic symphony composed to celebrate the memory of a great man«. Whether or not this »great man« was to be little Napoleon? At first it was, in all likelihood. But Beethoven probably decided to leave out any corresponding dedication, since the Corsican’s personal coronation as emperor was, in the composer’s eyes, a bitter betrayal of the republican ideas of the French Enlightenment. Was Beethoven himself perhaps the hero? An innovator in the context of music history? Whatever the answer, he certainly breaks new ground with his »Eroica«.

To mark Ukraine’s Independence Day, the exile orchestra MRIYA will perform an extraordinary concert with works by German and Ukrainian composers. The ensemble was founded in March 2022 by professional musicians who had to flee to Germany to escape the horrors of the Russian war of aggression and, under the direction of violinist Kateryna Suprun, founded an ensemble that grew into the MRIYA exile orchestra with the support of the Hamburg-based funding organisation Culture Connects e. V.. With around 80 concerts in venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie, the Gewandhaus Leipzig and the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, the orchestra has established an excellent reputation.

For the anniversary concert, the orchestra under the direction of Wolf Tobias M. Müller showcases its musical breadth with a colourful bouquet of overtures and arias from Mozart to Puccini as well as Schubert’s »Unfinished« Symphony. To celebrate the anniversiary, a new percussion concerto by Fredrik Schwenk will be premiered.

However, the programme opens with an excursion to the south: to Giuseppe Verdi and his overture from »La forza del destino«.

»This Mozart is rock ’n’ roll«, said the NDR about the recording of the last three Mozart symphonies by Ensemble Resonanz under its Principal Guest Conductor Riccardo Minasi. Symphony No. 35 »Haffner« is now on the programme with this level of energy. In addition, Nils Mönkemeyer on the viola and William Youn on the piano explore fragments from Mozart’s pen. The programme ends with Mozart’s symphony in all its elegance, preceded by his thoughts in the form of sketches and fragments, arranged by Isabel Mundry: melodies to whistle along to, a charming minuet, a presto with verve and a rapturous gesture. The casual overture by his contemporary Marianna von Martines invites us into the salon of the 18th century, while in a new chamber concerto Manfred Trojahn distils the muted sound of gardens that have become silent.

Zwischen West und Ost. »… der arabischen 4« hat Nicolaus A. Huber ein Werk gewidmet, das er als Aufforderung zum kulturellen Austausch verstanden wissen will. Das Orchesterstück »Vapur« von Stefan Pohlit trägt den Namen der Passagierfähren in Istanbul, die das Festland mit den Inseln an der Nahtstelle zwischen Orient und Okzident verbinden. Von der mystischen Ausrichtung des Islam inspiriert, steuert der palästinensisch-israelische Komponist Samir Odeh-Tamimi ein Konzentrat seiner Beschäftigung mit Koran-Gesängen und Sufi-Musik bei. Dazwischen Johannes Moser mit dem neuen Cellokonzert des Österreichers Bernd Richard Deutsch, das im Auftrag des Tonkünstler-Orchesters und des hr-Sinfonieorchesters entstand.
