We are delighted that John Storgårds will be our guest again this season, as he is a highly valued member of our orchestra family. In addition to his regular appearances in Bamberg as a conductor, he was active in other roles last summer: as part of the jury in our Mahler Competition. As a conductor, he is known for his creative instinct in arranging programmes and will guide us through his rich selection of works with a keen sense of rhythm: We start with a waltz from a rarely heard gem – Shostakovich’s operetta, first performed in 1959, which revolves around everyday life in a Plattenbau housing estate. Poulenc could be a real »rascal« – as evidenced by his concerto written in 1932, despite some of its elegiac tones. We are pleased to welcome two young pianists, Lucas and Arthur Jussen, for their debut in Bamberg. The concert will also feature the Symphony No. 3 by Ukrainian composer Victoria Polevá: this haunting piece was written in 2003 and at times creates powerful sonic massifs, but is otherwise characterised by a melancholy tone. This austere mood suits our guest conductor wonderfully as a transition to the initially very pensive nature of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6 – which, however, then ends in a sarcastic circus frenzy. This is sure to be a moving experience, as the press raved about our cordial collaboration with the likeable Finn on the podium: »John Storgårds allowed for highly emotional, exuberant, free and joyful music-making, which the superb Bambergers savoured to the full. Everything was just right – a great moment!«

World-class finale: under the theme of »Zukunft« (Future), the Hamburg International Music Festival brings together the global players of classical music to conclude the season with exciting programmes. Included here is one of the most long-standing and prestigious orchestras in the USA: the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Led by star conductor Jaap van Zweden, they fill the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall with the visionary music of Gustav Mahler. Only a few composers have bestowed as many futuristic aspects to orchestral music as Mahler. A sought-after conductor with an international career himself, when composing, he intimately knew about the limits of the orchestra and could exhaust and repeatedly push them. In his magnificent and sombre Symphony No. 6, the most obvious sign of Mahler’s gift for innovation is a novel percussion effect: the famous hammer blow, which conjures up the apocalypse in the tragic final movement and thereby became the symbol of this entire work. This is, however, somewhat curtailed because the rest of the symphony is no less emotional, stirring and brilliant. A huge work of fiction in notes, captivating from the first to the last second!

It has been an incredible 40 years since the Chicago Symphony Orchestra last performed in a ProArte concert. It is therefore high time to present America’s finest orchestra, one of the most traditional orchestras in the USA, to the ProArte audience at the Elbphilharmonie. As proven Mahler specialists, the musicians from Chicago make a substantial contribution to our season focus: according to Jaap van Zweden, Mahler’s 7th Symphony lies »exactly on the border between dream and reality« and is therefore one of the most demanding works – for conductor and orchestra alike. The path leads through night to light of the jubilant finale of the symphony, which the busy court opera director Mahler once again put to paper in his summer retreat on Lake Wörthersee. »At the first stroke of the oar, the theme [...] of the introduction to the first movement came to mind.«

What might it have been like in the Mendelssohn or Jussen household? Were there always enough pianos for all the children to practise at the same time? It is inconceivable that Felix Mendelssohn was only 14 years old when he premiered his double concerto with his sister Fanny, who was four years older, at a matinee in his parents’ home. »What are all the child prodigies compared to him?« wrote the piano virtuoso Ignaz Moscheles at the time. Lucas and Arthur Jussen also achieved astonishing mastery of the piano at a very young age – they made their debut at the Concertgebouw when they were 10 and 13 years of age respectively... When the brothers appear alongside the renowned Gewandhausorchester Leipzig in the current ProArte season, Andris Nelsons, a true successor to Mendelssohn as only 13 conductors separate them, will be conducting the top orchestra.

Jaap van Zweden conducts Anton Bruckner’s popular Fourth Symphony. Enticing, entreating themes and motifs which are constantly repeated lure us into a new sound world. Bruckner was more than a century ahead of Steve Reich’s hypnotic music. The American minimalist pioneer has written increasingly exuberant compositions over the years. Reich claims that the calibre of modern orchestras is now so high that he no longer need limit himself to composing for small ensembles. Music for Ensemble and Orchestra is an enchanting tapestry of tight rhythmic patterns and kaleidoscopic harmonies, with a timeless effect.Time also seems to stand still in Anton Bruckner’s symphonies, as if one were viewing a slowly revolving celestial body from a great distance. The Fourth Symphony, however, is an exceptionally agile and anecdotal work, which Bruckner himself described as a ‘romantic spectacle’ of medieval castles, magical forests and knights on proud horses.
