Morton Feldman's "Coptic Light," inspired by Coptic textiles, is an orchestral expression of his interest in woven materials. The hr-Sinfonieorchester's concert connects this piece with works by Tania León, George Benjamin, and Sofia Gubaidulina, exploring cultural clashes, manuscript layers, and 20th-century Russian history, including the Cold War and Perestroika. The concert lasts approximately 115 minutes including intermission.

The flute and soprano voices are sisters – not only in spirit, but also because of their sound characteristics. Camilla Hoitenga and Anna Herbst provide tangible proof of this with the program »Changing Light«. Over the course of her career, Camilla Hoitenga – born in Michigan/USA in 1954 – has worked closely with Kaija Saariaho for decades and (premiered) numerous of her works, including »Dolce Tormento«. Here, the beguiling piccolo flute merges with Francesco Petrarch's Sonnet 132, an idealization of the feminine presented in sections by the instrumentalist. What happens in »Dolce Tormento« in personal union, Saariaho breaks down accordingly in »Changing Light« (version for soprano and flute): While the expressive voice recites an evening prayer by the American Rabbi Jules Harlow, the versatile flute playing conjures up a light-dark dualism inherent in the text. This also includes Malika Kishino's »Monochrome Garden VIII« for alto flute, in which the light reflections of Japanese gardens and creatures buzzing around become the musical driving force. The music of the composer Charles Ives, who was influenced by transcendentalism, reflects the fact that he saw life and spirituality under the sign of endless questions - “The Unanswered Question” from 1906/07 already bears his attitude in its title and resolves it musically. Lera Auerbach's Symphony No. 6 was commissioned for the 70th anniversary of the International Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem in 2024. Auerbach dedicates her work entitled “Vessels of Light” to the Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who saved thousands of Jewish people by issuing visas during the Second World War, including the father-in-law of cello soloist Kristina Reiko Cooper. The Kabbalistic tale of the “breaking of the vessels” at the creation of the world, the appreciative art of Japanese Kintsugi, which uses lacquer and gold powder to save broken porcelain or ceramics, and the quiet words of the biblical Psalm 121 are woven by the composer into a tapestry of words and music.
