When a world-class orchestra bestows a 21-year-old conductor with the title of principal guest conductor, this says something. But the debut by the Finn Tarmo Peltokoski on the stand for the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in 2021 filled the musicians with enthusiasm to such an extent that they awarded this accolade for the very first time. After his Elbphilharmonie debut in March 2023, Peltokoski is now a guest again and walks together with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen on the winding paths of Symphony No. 5 by Jean Sibelius. Beforehand, you can experience a soloist in Brahms’ First Piano Concerto with Fabian Müller, who is at the head of the young generation of German pianists. Johannes Brahms wrangled for a long time with the composition of symphonies; Beethoven’s legacy seemed too great for him. The idea of transforming initial symphonic plans into a piano concerto came to him in a dream: »I was absolutely delighted!« he writes to Clara Schumann. Fabian Müller, who since winning five prizes at once at the ARD International Music Competition in 2017 is a sought-after pianist, elicited enthusiastic cheers at the Elbphilharmonie together with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen just last year – high time to build on this success. Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 came about in a very lengthy process. The Finnish composer was still on the search for new solutions for a genre overloaded with traditions. But the long work paid off – with this symphony, Sibelius has one of his most original and most popular works!

With great passion and energy, Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen allow audiences to experience the young Schubert in all his unbridled joy of exploration. Schubert already began composing intensively at boarding school in Vienna, and was soon trying his hand at the supreme discipline of the symphony. His First and Second exude a spirited lust for life, and despite the clear influence of great role models such as Haydn and Mozart, it is still possible to hear Schubert’s unique voice coming through. In contrast to the rambunctious atmosphere of those two early works, Brahm’s Violin Concerto is a mature and almost philosophical work. Despite the countless technical difficulties with which Brahms peppered the solo part, the work has been a cornerstone of the concert repertoire ever since it was first performed. Veronika Eberle now takes on the challenge and, after the existential drama of the first movement, really lets the sparks fly in the finale.

Very different worlds encounter each other in this concert. What luck that the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen is just as well known for its energetic music-making as for its versatility! Together with principal conductor Paavo Järvi, the musicians dive into the humorous and high-energy music of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and between them let violinist Akiko Suwanei shine with the unconventional and dramatic violin concerto by Antonín Dvorák. Probably no other violin concerto has a similarly rousing entry in which orchestra and solo violin immediately begin an impassioned dialogue. The rest of the work is also fascinating with a combination of innovative ideas and catchy Slavic melodies. Compared with this heated world of expression, the music of Haydn acts like a witty conversation among good friends and so forms the elegant start of an evening rich in contrast. The concert ends with the final symphony by Haydn’s friend and artistic rival Mozart. The two of them provided a life-long musical rivalry and motivated each other to top compositional performances. You can hear the results: Mozart’s »Jupiter« Symphony is just brimming with joie de vivre as a result and was even hailed as the »greatest triumph in instrumental composition« in London. What a finale!

A proven dream team: Paavo Järvi and »his« Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen have blended an intensive artistic collaboration for a long time. They are especially at home at the interface between the classical and the romantic with the music of Ludwig van Beethoven and his successors. At the Hamburg International Music Festival, they are now exclusively pursuing this soundscape. Together with star violinist Janine Jansen, they dive into Beethoven’s monumental violin concerto and present it with an equally ground-breaking symphony by Franz Schubert. Beethoven conceived his violin concerto as an alternative to stark virtuoso pieces without acrobatics or cliched melodies. With its epic scale of just under three quarters of an hour and an aura of philosophical profundity, this work has been spellbinding to this day and presents violinists with the highest demands of musical shaping. In expression, the music penetrates very far into the intensity of romantic worlds of emotions and so builds a bridge to the music of Franz Schubert. Schubert’s »Tragic« does not skimp on dramatic moments, but in the fiery finale ultimately brings itself to a cheerful conclusion.
