The Harlem Gospel Singers

The Harlem Gospel Singers
The Harlem Gospel Singers are finally back! With a lot of groove they spread the »Good News«, hope and joie de vivre and strengthen the sense of community! Including great songs like »Amazing Grace«,» You’ve Got A Friend«, »When The Saints Go Marching In«, »Oh Happy Day« and Michael Jackson’s »Earth Song« in a special gospel arrangement – performed by a six-piece all-star band and eight outstanding US gospel artists. The Harlem Gospell Singers demonstrate the fundamental importance of gospel for American music culture. From its beginnings in the 18th century to the present day, spirituals and gospel have influenced almost all forms of popular music: blues, soul, R’n’B, jazz, rock, even hip hop and country. At the same time, these different styles have found their way into gospel music. With its unmistakable sound, the brilliant gospel phenomenon has conquered the metropolises of the United States and Europe. To date, more than 2.5 million people have enthusiastically celebrated the annual R’n’B, jazz and pop-inspired shows by the world’s most important gospel formation.

The Golden Voices of Gospel

Tue, Dec 9, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
The Golden Voices of Gospel
»Clap your hands...«, »stamp your feet...«, »shout hallelujah....« will be the order of the day when the audience is invited to join in and experience the music. The sometimes melancholy, sometimes rousingly spirited gospels, supported by the fantastic rhythm section, get under your skin like hardly any other music. And yet these are church songs as they are sung in the services of the Black Churches in the USA and the Caribbean. In their very personal and inimitable way, the Golden Voices of Gospel invite you on a journey through a century of spirituals, traditionals and gospels. This music expresses like no other the attitude to life, the pride and the devotion of the vast majority of the black population in the USA.

Soweto Gospel Choir

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Soweto Gospel Choir
The Soweto Gospel Choir is one of the world’s most famous gospel choirs. It has won three Grammys and performed with U2, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But when the South African singers step onto the stage and unleash their powerful voices, all that becomes trivial. Because in those moments, the choir is focused only on its mission, one that has remained constant ever since its founding in 2003: »Spreading joy«. And it usually takes only a few bars for the audience to feel the effect. The choir was formed 20 years ago in Soweto, the South West Townships of Johannesburg in which Nelson Mandela lived, and from which he inspired the South African freedom movement. Since 2003, the Soweto Gospel Choir has performed at historic ceremonies in democratic South Africa, including Nelson Mandela’s state funeral in 2013. Today, the choir tours the world giving concerts and as ambassadors of Mandela’s foundation. As part of the »André Heller Reflektor«, the choir is now coming to the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall to perform familiar hits by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding, as well as gospel songs written by pop legends such as Bob Dylan, Whitney Houston and Prince. One of the things that make the choir’s concerts so special is their translations of songs into some of South Africa’s twelve official languages. Leonard Cohen’s famous »Hallelujah« is just as powerful when sung in Sotho and Zulu – as anyone who has heard the Soweto Gospel Choir’s version will attest.
