Frielinghaus Ensemble

The Frielinghaus Ensemble brings together internationally acclaimed chamber musicians, soloists and orchestral musicians from Germany and other European countries. An annual tour of northern Germany at the beginning of January is an integral part of the programme, along with other concerts throughout Germany and Switzerland.

The German-French »arabesques« cultural festival was started in Hamburg in 2011. With more than 50 events each year, it is now the biggest festival of its kind in northern Germany. The arabesques ensemble, which was initially active only during the festival, has since developed a dynamism of its own, and gives guest performances in Germany and abroad all year round. Musicians from the three major Hamburg orchestras as well as orchestral soloists from all over Germany play in varying line-ups. The ensemble focuses primarily on unusual projects from the Baroque period to the modern era, often performing forgotten works and pieces by unfamiliar composers.

The New Year’s concert by the Frielinghaus Ensemble, led by ECHO Klassik prizewinner and violinist Gustav Frielinghaus, has already become a tradition at the Elbphilharmonie. After concerts in northern Germany, the ensemble will continue on to Switzerland via the Bremen Sendesaal and Stuttgart. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote »Passionate and tender« about the recently released sextet CD »Souvenir de Florence« and Radio Bremen spoke of »power and a lot of pleasure in making music«. The programme of the New Year’s Concert 2025 spans a broad musical arc that communicates with various other forms of artistic expression. The minuet from Boccherini’s String Quintet in E major achieved great popularity through the crime comedy »Ladykillers« from 1955, where it is played over a gramophone to accompany gangster meetings. The elegant, classical String Quintet in A major by Glazunov is peppered with numerous Russian folk melodies. Finally, Schubert’s String Quintet in C major is a »monolith«Ihre Nachricht. ich habe den text aif u of chamber music: the sound of the ensemble opens up to the orchestral to take on the characteristics of a chamber music symphony.

Hamburg Stage Ensemble
The intercultural Hamburg Stage Ensemble, which is characterised by its energetic and precise ensemble playing and has already performed in renowned venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie and the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, invites the audience to another concert in the Elbphilharmonie’s Recital Hall. Often played and yet always reinterpreted – the Hamburg Stage Ensemble’s joy of playing Antonio Vivaldi’s »Four Seasons« with the outstanding soloist and artistic director Arsen Zorayan is captivating. In the second part of the concert, the Hamburg Stage Ensemble takes the audience on a journey through European classical music. The programme includes works by Mozart, Hasse and Mendelssohn.

Agata Zubel's “Mother Lode III” (Hauptader 3), which explores the effects of spatial sound, is followed by the world premiere of a concerto for two percussionists and ensemble by Latvian composer Jānis Petraškevičs. Composer Anna Korsuns compares her work “Plexus” (network mesh) to “a complex network of sounds that is constantly in motion and forms an organic structure.” The final piece is Georg Katzer's “Godot kommt doch, geht aber wieder”, a musical game with expectations and surprises.
