Elim Chan & Rudolf Buchbinder

Thu, Dec 22, 2022, 20:00
Elim Chan (Conductress), Rudolf Buchbinder (Piano), Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Long live the classics! Rudolf Buchbinder, the grandseigneur of the piano and a welcome guest at the BRSO, will play Mozart’s C minor Piano Concerto of 1786. The gloomy, ominous opening is unusual for Mozart’s concertos; and even if a more relaxed, almost cheerful mood reigns in the Larghetto, the final set of variations returns us to the wind-swept C minor atmosphere. Elim Chan, a conductor born in Hong Kong, will open the concert with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, a paean to the ideal of liberty and revolt against political suppression. Rounding off the evening is a piece never before played in Munich by the BRSO: Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony.

Shostakovich and Prokofiev were repeatedly targeted by Soviet art critics. Prokofiev appeased them with his heroic Fifth Symphony, while Shostakovich did so with his highly virtuosic 2nd Piano Concerto, brilliantly performed by Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya. Vinnitskaya, who won the ECHO Klassik award in 2014 for her recording of the concerto, is now accompanied by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Elim Chan. Prokofiev's 5th Symphony, written in 1944 during the Soviet victory over Nazi troops, also displays combative traits.

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra / María Dueñas / Kazuki Yamada

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, María Dueñas (Violin), Kazuki Yamada (Conductor)
Wherever violinist María Dueñas (born in Granada in 2002) appears, audience and critics alike are full of enthusiasm. She is rightly perceived as an exceptional talent: the musician with mixed Austrian and Spanish roots impresses not only with an astonishing artistic maturity and a beautiful tone, but also with the cadenzas that she composes herself. After she won first prize at the 2021 Yehudi Menuhin Competition, Deutsche Grammophon immediately gave her an exclusive recording contract. She has devoted her first album to Beethoven’s Violin Concerto – the work she is playing in this concert. She is accompanied by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with its newly-appointed chief conductor Kazuki Yamada, who follows in the footsteps of several great predecessors: Sir Simon Rattle, Andris Nelsons and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

Ciconia Consort & Maria Milstein: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Fri, Feb 7, 2025, 20:15
Ciconia Consort, Dick van Gasteren (Conductor), Maria Milstein (Violin)
In The Hanging Gardens of Babylon the internationally acclaimed violinist Maria Milstein will shine in Arutiunian’s grand Violin Concerto. The musically poetic journey in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and Marco Polo follows the structure of a promenade, always followed by a caravanserai. During the promenade, with traditional Armenian music, we imagine ourselves in the desert on the back of a camel. The journey starts with the gallant and virtuoso Concerto for strings by the film composer Nino Rota and crosses the sea to Constantinople with the Gondol Şarkısı written by Sultan Abdülaziz in Eurasian style. Fikret Amirov, who grew up with ‘Persian-Arab’ folk music, developed a new genre, the symphonic mugam. His Symphony for string orchestra is dedicated to the great 12th-century Persian poet Nizami. The Silk Road ends in Beijing with Song of the Ch’in, pure Chinese sounds by the living Chinese-American composer Zhou Long.
