Wherever violinist María Dueñas (born in Granada in 2002) appears, audience and critics alike are full of enthusiasm. She is rightly perceived as an exceptional talent: the musician with mixed Austrian and Spanish roots impresses not only with an astonishing artistic maturity and a beautiful tone, but also with the cadenzas that she composes herself. After she won first prize at the 2021 Yehudi Menuhin Competition, Deutsche Grammophon immediately gave her an exclusive recording contract. She has devoted her first... Read full text

Vienna Symphony / María Dueñas / Marie Jaquot

Tue, Nov 26, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Wiener Symphoniker, María Dueñas (Violin), Marie Jacquot (Conductor)
We will be hearing more from Marie Jacquot! The Principal Guest Conductor of the Vienna Symphony – and Chief Conductor Designate of the WDR Symphony Orchestra – inspires musicians and audiences alike with fresh interpretations as well as with the stunningly brilliant sounds she knows how to elicit from »her« Viennese orchestra. In her ProArte programme, Jacquot demonstrates an awareness of tradition by opening the concert with a Bruckner arrangement by the orchestra’s founder Ferdinand Löwe. The rest of the programme is also all about Vienna: María Dueñas returns to ProArte after her brilliant debut in March 2024 with the violin concerto by Viennese-by-choice Ludwig van Beethoven. The crowning finale is a piano quartet by probably the most famous Viennese immigrant after Beethoven: the op. 25 by Johannes Brahms, arranged for orchestra by native Viennese Arnold Schönberg.

Kansas City Symphony / Conrad Tao / Matthias Pintscher

Thu, Aug 29, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Kansas City Symphony, Conrad Tao (Piano), Matthias Pintscher (Conductor)
A gentle trill from the clarinet, a lascivious glissando, and one of the most famous pieces for piano and orchestra picks up speed: George Gershwin’s »Rhapsody in Blue«. Presented to the public slightly awkwardly in 1924 as an »experiment in modern music«, it has since become something of a signature tune for the Broadway composer. Catchy jazz and blues melodies together with a casual orchestral sound and a highly virtuoso piano part bring the Roaring Twenties vividly to life. The Kansas City Symphony is celebrating its 100th anniversary under the direction of its new chief conductor Matthias Pintscher together with 30-year-old pianist Conrad Tao, whom the New York Times sees as the »future of classical music«. This highlight of the piano repertoire is framed by two further classics by famous American composers: Charles Ives’s »Three Places in New England« with a marvellously whimsical march in the middle section, and Aaron Copland’s powerful Third Symphony. Welcome to the United States of America!

Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra

Sat, May 17, 2025, 15:00
Gothenburg Symphony, Santtu-Matias Rouvali (Conductor), Jan Lisiecki (Piano)
The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra visits Konserthuset under the baton of its Chief Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. They are joined by the celebrated Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki, internationally acclaimed by both audiences and critics for his beautiful touch and boundless virtuosity.Together, they present Frédéric Chopin's beloved First Piano Concerto. For Chopin, the piano always took centre stage. His nocturnes, études, mazurkas, polonaises, and impromptus have captivated listeners ever since he charmed audiences in the salons of Paris, or at the few concerts he gave during his all-too-short life. The orchestra plays a subordinate role even in the piano concerto – it is the soloist who shines with imaginative passages, beautiful bel canto melodies, and swirling dances.Regarding what would become his final symphony, Tchaikovsky wrote in a letter to his brother Anatoly: "I am now completely absorbed in the new work and find it difficult to tear myself away from it. I believe it will be one of my best works. I must finish it as soon as possible." The symphony indeed became one of the great musical masterpieces, filled with profound darkness and exalted beauty.

Concertgebouw Orchestra & Maria João Pires: Mozart

Wed, Dec 11, 2024, 20:15
Concertgebouw Orchestra, Iván Fischer (Conductor), Maria João Pires (Piano)
When Maria João Pires takes her place at the piano and leads you into Mozart’s sound world, you simply lose track of time. You can’t get any closer to the composer than this! The ‘Jeunehomme’ concerto is named after the amateur pianist Victoire Jenamy – a discovery not made until 2004 – rather than referring to Mozart’s own youth at the time of its composition.Honorary guest conductor Iván Fischer also leads the Concertgebouw Orchestra in two works brimming with optimism, joie de vivre and a love of nature. Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony is a work of mature mastery. The composer had achieved international fame and was at the height of his powers when he wrote it. And as his operatic ambitions grew, so did the dramatic quality of his symphonies, as the richly varied Eighth demonstrates. Marsyas by Alphons Diepenbrock, the Dutch classicist turned composer, is a fine rarity. Diepenbrock stayed true to classically Greek themes, as in his incidental music about a faun who challenges the gods to a musical duel. Performed here is the Entr’acte, nicknamed ‘Zwerftochten door het woud’ (Wandering Through the Forest).
