The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie turns 50!

Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Main Auditorium (Berlin)
Junge Deutsche Philharmonie (Orchestra), Roderick Cox (Conductor), RIAS Kammerchor (Choir)
Happy Birthday Junge Deutsche Philharmonie! Germany's best music students have been playing together in this orchestra for 50 years – in preparation for a career in a professional orchestra. What characterises its members? A high level of technical proficiency, an irrepressible desire to make music together, and a passion for the music of our time. These qualities are also reflected in this programme – with the spherical tones of Missy Mazzoli's Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), the labyrinthine sound structures of Luciano Berio's Sinfonia for eight voices and orchestra and the rhythmic energy of Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps. Roderick Cox conducts.

Junge Deutsche Philharmonie / RIAS Kammerchor / Roderick Cox

Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, RIAS Kammerchor, Roderick Cox (Conductor)
The premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet »Le sacre du printemps« in Paris in 1913 was one of the biggest scandals in music history: the radically modern choreography and music prompted the audience to heckle, whistle and even start scuffles. But today, »The Rite of Spring« regularly receives standing ovations for its gripping rhythms and dramatic intensity. As Germany’s national orchestra of music college students, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie under the baton of Roderick Cox has the talent and youthful vigour to perform Stravinsky’s masterpiece to perfection. »Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres)« by US composer Missy Mazzoli orbits like a planet in the solar system. Compound rhythms and stylised Baroque ornaments become intertwining passages. »The piece is stirring and agitated at the same time,« says the composer. While »Sinfonia« in Mazolli’s title refers to the Baroque elements in the score, for Luciano Berio, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2025, it refers to the origin of the word – harmony. In Berio’s »Sinfonia« for orchestra and eight voices, the orchestra joins forces with the renowned voices of the RIAS Kammerchor to present exciting music full of quotes from Samuel Beckett to Gustav Mahler.

The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen / Patricia Kopatchinskaja / Pekka Kuusisto

Sat, Sep 28, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Patricia Kopatchinskaja (Violin), Bettina Wild (Flute), Pekka Kuusisto (Director)
The orchestra as a powerhouse – with its virtuosity and joy of playing, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen creates electrifying concert experiences. For their first Elbphilharmonie concert of the season, Pekka Kuusisto can demonstrate his talent on the rostrum and, with music by Samuel Barber and Sergei Prokofiev, tease out late romantic pathos and edgy drama from the members of the Kammerphilharmonie. Exceptional violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja can again illustrate on Arnold Schönberg’s violin concerto that classifications such as unplayability have no meaning for her. With Samuel Barber’s »Adagio«, the programme begins with a piece that explores the sound of a full string orchestra in its entire depth. After this melancholic curtain-raiser, a work takes to the stage whose complexities have certainly made some musicians get their fingers in knots. To breathe life into the demanding lines and figurations of Arnold Schönberg’s violin concerto calls for an artist of Kopatchinskaja’s calibre. She combines supreme technique with perfect versatility and musical imagination. After the interval, Kuusisto then plunges into the existential drama of Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet music of »Romeo and Juliet« with the Kammerphilharmonie. Captivating melodies, brilliant orchestration, snappy rhythms and devastating tragedy – with these ingredients, Prokofiev portrayed the greatest love story of all time and in so doing created one of his most popular works.

The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen / Fabian Müller / Tarmo Peltokoski

Wed, Oct 9, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Fabian Müller (Piano), Tarmo Peltokoski (Conductor)
When a world-class orchestra bestows a 21-year-old conductor with the title of principal guest conductor, this says something. But the debut by the Finn Tarmo Peltokoski on the stand for the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in 2021 filled the musicians with enthusiasm to such an extent that they awarded this accolade for the very first time. After his Elbphilharmonie debut in March 2023, Peltokoski is now a guest again and walks together with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen on the winding paths of Symphony No. 5 by Jean Sibelius. Beforehand, you can experience a soloist in Brahms’ First Piano Concerto with Fabian Müller, who is at the head of the young generation of German pianists. Johannes Brahms wrangled for a long time with the composition of symphonies; Beethoven’s legacy seemed too great for him. The idea of transforming initial symphonic plans into a piano concerto came to him in a dream: »I was absolutely delighted!« he writes to Clara Schumann. Fabian Müller, who since winning five prizes at once at the ARD International Music Competition in 2017 is a sought-after pianist, elicited enthusiastic cheers at the Elbphilharmonie together with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen just last year – high time to build on this success. Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 came about in a very lengthy process. The Finnish composer was still on the search for new solutions for a genre overloaded with traditions. But the long work paid off – with this symphony, Sibelius has one of his most original and most popular works!

The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen / Veronika Eberle / Paavo Järvi

Wed, Apr 10, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Veronika Eberle (Violin), Paavo Järvi (Conductor)
With great passion and energy, Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen allow audiences to experience the young Schubert in all his unbridled joy of exploration. Schubert already began composing intensively at boarding school in Vienna, and was soon trying his hand at the supreme discipline of the symphony. His First and Second exude a spirited lust for life, and despite the clear influence of great role models such as Haydn and Mozart, it is still possible to hear Schubert’s unique voice coming through. In contrast to the rambunctious atmosphere of those two early works, Brahm’s Violin Concerto is a mature and almost philosophical work. Despite the countless technical difficulties with which Brahms peppered the solo part, the work has been a cornerstone of the concert repertoire ever since it was first performed. Veronika Eberle now takes on the challenge and, after the existential drama of the first movement, really lets the sparks fly in the finale.

The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen / Akiko Suwanai / Paavo Järvi

Thu, Nov 28, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Akiko Suwanai (Violin), Paavo Järvi (Conductor)
Very different worlds encounter each other in this concert. What luck that the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen is just as well known for its energetic music-making as for its versatility! Together with principal conductor Paavo Järvi, the musicians dive into the humorous and high-energy music of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and between them let violinist Akiko Suwanei shine with the unconventional and dramatic violin concerto by Antonín Dvorák. Probably no other violin concerto has a similarly rousing entry in which orchestra and solo violin immediately begin an impassioned dialogue. The rest of the work is also fascinating with a combination of innovative ideas and catchy Slavic melodies. Compared with this heated world of expression, the music of Haydn acts like a witty conversation among good friends and so forms the elegant start of an evening rich in contrast. The concert ends with the final symphony by Haydn’s friend and artistic rival Mozart. The two of them provided a life-long musical rivalry and motivated each other to top compositional performances. You can hear the results: Mozart’s »Jupiter« Symphony is just brimming with joie de vivre as a result and was even hailed as the »greatest triumph in instrumental composition« in London. What a finale!
