Collegium Musicum Hamburg / Marina Kulow

On this concert evening, the collegium musicum hamburg will perform together with the wonderful pianist Marina Kulow. The programme includes pieces from the Baroque to the Romantic period. Marina Kulow is not only a talented pianist, she also projects her musical ideas onto a canvas. Her works of art will be exhibited in the foyer of the Laeiszhalle on the day of the concert. At this concert, Marina Kulow will play Bach’s piano concerto as well as the famous work Rondo-Capriccioso by Saint-Saëns for violin, but arranged for piano by her professor Igor Olovnikov, giving the audience a special opportunity to hear this piece played on piano for the first time.

Neue Philharmonie Hamburg

The Neue Philharmonie Hamburg was founded in 2003 and is made up of freelance professional musicians from all over the world. Its artistic portfolio focuses on symphonic music from the Baroque to the Modern periods. In addition, the Neue Philharmonie Hamburg also regularly appears in smaller formations, such as chamber music ensembles.

Hamburg Stage Ensemble

The Hamburg Stage Ensemble is made up of young, highly qualified instrumentalists who, together, pursue the vision not only of playing music, but also of sharing its magic with as many people as possible. In that, their focus is on the joy of making music together. The small number of musicians and the conscious decision to do without a conductor are intended to allow the audience to participate directly in the concert programme.

In Garmisch, August 1941, Richard Strauss completed his last opera "Capriccio", a one-act opera described as intellectual and witty, a stark contrast to the horrific events of its time. The opera features beautiful music. Bohuslav Martinů, a prolific Czech composer, left behind nearly 100 chamber music works. His String Sextet, composed in Paris in 1932, won the Coolidge Prize. Brahms' String Sextet No. 1, initially conceived as a septet, received widespread acclaim.

Jordi Savall commissioned Arvo Pärt to compose a setting of the Gregorian antiphon "Da pacem Domine" for a peace concert. Completed after the 2004 Madrid bombings, the piece is performed annually in Spain to commemorate the victims. Pärt based the work on the antiphon's melody. The other voices follow Pärt's tintinnabuli style but are treated like a Renaissance motet. "Da pacem Domine" exists in various instrumental settings. Haydn opened concert halls for string quartets, influencing Beethoven who surpassed him with symphonic chamber music. The Armat Quartet performs a work born from the idea of infinite songs. In 1824, Schubert composed his large octet and two major string quartets, including "Death and the Maiden," whose variations movement reflects Matthias Claudius's poem.

The third Hamburg Symphony Chamber Concert invites you on a diverse journey through countries and times. It opens with Handel's "Water Music" overture, adapted for horns. Fauré's "Pavane" follows in a version for four horns, before Bruckner's Andante in D-flat major unites the horn quartet. Johann Michael Haydn takes us back to the 18th century, and compositions by Michael Ranzenberger and Christoph Gottwald for euphonium conclude the concert.

A Far East women's string trio (Japan, Taiwan, China) invites a Swedish pianist to perform chamber music gems from Russian, Spanish, Argentinian, Polish, and Thuringian composers in Hamburg. The program includes Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite, Cassadó's Danse du diable vert, Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango, Rachmaninov's Vocalise, Wieniawski's Polonaise, and Bach's Goldberg Variations.

This recital opens with Bach's trio sonatas for violin and harpsichord, highlighting the harpsichord's novel equality. Schubert's C-Major Fantasy for violin and piano, written for Josef Slavík, challenged audiences with its length and free form. Sibelius's Nocturne from "Belshazzar's Feast" follows Leschanah's palace dialogue with the stars. Saint-Saëns's first violin sonata, announced with humor, became a hit. Kroll's "Banjo and Fiddle" captures American folk music and gained popularity through Jascha Heifetz.
