Fancy some classical music?!

Sat, Jan 25, 2025, 20:00
Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, Lorenzo Viotti (Conductor)
Who's up for classical music? For the third time, the Philharmonie opens its doors to young people when the Gürzenich Orchestra invites them to »Concert & Kölsch«. Two symphonies, one spectacle: Prokofiev and Glazunov, two Russian masters, meet: Prokofiev's 5th Symphony, composed in 1944 in the midst of the chaos of war, sounds heroic, emotional and full of energy. He paints impressive orchestral pictures - sometimes lyrical, sometimes gloomy, sometimes overwhelming. You are in for a real goosebump moment! Glazunov's Symphony No. 5 begins mysteriously, unfolds into a playful scherzo and culminates in a radiant finale that simply sounds monumental. A real highlight of Romantic music! No wonder this piece is celebrated as a masterpiece. This time, Lorenzo Viotti is on the podium - a young, charismatic conductor who turns late Romantic music into pure sound magic. A concert for everyone who loves epic music and is in the mood for an unforgettable live experience! After the concert, you can round off the evening with DJ sounds by Loush and relaxed conversation in the foyer. Free drink included!

Paul Hindemith is among the most underrated artists of the 20th century. Anyone who listens to his Kammermusik, op. 24 no. 1, a genuinely sparkling with ideas and light as a feather piece of music, will come to this conclusion. This architect of the cornerstone of historical performance and founding father of the famous Donaueschingen Contemporary Music Festival embodied the dominant ideals of the New Objectivity in German art of the 1920s, namely simplicity of means and communicativeness, in his Chamber Music series. It is a peculiar variety of neo-classicism, unjustly overshadowed by French or Russian music. The third movement in Kammermusik (op. 36 no. 3) is essentially a chamber cello concerto with explicit references to Baroque music. It is not without reason, after all, that this entire series has been compared to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. Surprisingly similar in its spirit tone, although referring to the classical form and not devoid of stronger emotional accents, is the Sinfonietta of the then-only 18-year-old Benjamin Britten, already heralding his extraordinary talent. Indian Classical Music: Soumik Datta

Sat, Sep 14, 2024, 20:15
Soumik Datta (Sarod), Soumik Datta (Artistic leader), Gurdain Singh Rayatt (Tabla), Camilo Tirado (Sound)
Soumik Datta is a British composer and sarod maestro (the sarod is a 19-stringed fretless lute, as opposed to the more traditional sitar.) Soumik Datta is more than a sarod virtuoso though. A polymath composer, producer, bandleader, TV presenter and Artistic Director of the Soumik Datta Arts charity, his work embraces traditional and contemporary art forms to address the urgent issues of our times. Soumik is best known for his creative collaborations with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Bill Bailey, Nitin Sawhney, Anoushka Shankar, Arijit Singh, Akram Khan, Javed Akhtar, London Philharmonic Orchestra and City of London Sinfonia amongst others. As a fervent champion of the preservation of Indian arts, Datta strives to bring this ancient Indian stringed instrument to new audiences on a global scale. While contributing to the preservation and ongoing development of musical heritage, Soumik believes that music can serve as a cultural anchor, deepening a sense of community, identity and heritage, while simultaneously reaching out in powerful ways to people of different backgrounds. What is the cost of forgetting? What is created when we misremember? Mone Rekho (or ‘Remember’ in Bengali) is an immersive concert that explores how the beauty and complexity of Indian music shifts and changes through the prism of memory. Born from Soumik’s conversations with elderly people in care homes, facilitated by University College of London and the Alzheimer’s Society, Mone Rekho weaves Indian music with electronic hybrids, visual collages, cinematic scenes, personal anecdotes and bursts of comedy. Accompanied by Gurdain Singh Rayatt on tabla and Camilo Tirado on live effects, Soumik moves between the roles of student, storyteller and master musician in a space that shifts from concert hall to classroom; from care homes to the streets of Kolkata. Everyone is left with something to think about - from remembering lost memories to learning something new. Intimate yet expansive, ‘Mone Rekho’ stretches your imagination.

The music of the composer Charles Ives, who was influenced by transcendentalism, reflects the fact that he saw life and spirituality under the sign of endless questions - “The Unanswered Question” from 1906/07 already bears his attitude in its title and resolves it musically. Lera Auerbach's Symphony No. 6 was commissioned for the 70th anniversary of the International Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem in 2024. Auerbach dedicates her work entitled “Vessels of Light” to the Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who saved thousands of Jewish people by issuing visas during the Second World War, including the father-in-law of cello soloist Kristina Reiko Cooper. The Kabbalistic tale of the “breaking of the vessels” at the creation of the world, the appreciative art of Japanese Kintsugi, which uses lacquer and gold powder to save broken porcelain or ceramics, and the quiet words of the biblical Psalm 121 are woven by the composer into a tapestry of words and music.
