Brass Band Berlin

Date & Time
Fri, Jan 3, 2025, 11:00
The string players always sit at the front of the podium at an orchestral concert, while the percussionists and brass players always sit behind them, in the second row, so to speak. As principal percussionist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Thomas Hoffmann wanted to change this fixed situation and founded the Brass Band Berlin. The idea was very well received by colleagues. The Brass Band Berlin is a perfect blend of brilliant musical sophistication and that little bit of extra entertainment.

In homage to a city where so much is possible: All three ensembles in this concert have their artistic home in Berlin – and also enjoy successful international careers. Singer Lucia Cadotsch and her trio ‘Speak Low’ captivate with their gentle, feather-light, unpretentious music, while the quartet of pianist and composer Julia Hülsmann is characterised by a style that is both intense and subtle. Kurt Rosenwinkel, who has worked with musicians such as Eric Clapton, Gary Burton and Brad Mehldau, is one of the most important voices on the Berlin and global jazz scene as a guitarist, composer and producer.

Götz Alsmann & Band

Fri, May 9, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Götz Alsmann (Piano), Götz Alsmann (Vocals), & band
The wisdom of proverbs and pop songs remain eternal truths... No wonder Götz Alsmann makes the night the centre of the evening on his new album and in his current programme. Or the evening as the highlight of the day? To this end, he draws on exquisite gems from the history of pop music, melancholic and humorous gems from 1910 to 1965 – and he does it differently to everyone else. It is not for nothing that the singer and pianist Götz Alsmann is regarded as the »King of German jazz schlager«.

Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band

Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Melvin Butler (Tenor Saxophone), Melvin Butler (Soprano saxophone), Myron Walden (Alto saxophone), Myron Walden (Bass clarinet), Jon Cowherd (Piano), Roland Guerin (Bass), Brian Blade (Drums)
With Brian Blade, one of the currently most influential jazz drummers comes to the Elbphilharmonie. He played alongside Wayne Shorter, Danilo Perez and John Patitucci in the legendary Wayne Shorter Quartet for two decades, sat at the drums with music greats, such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Rebekka Bakken and John Scofield, and enhanced albums by Bob Dylan and Norah Jones with his bespoke beats. The astounding variability with which he can adapt his playing to the stylistic approaches of any music has so far earned him four Grammy Awards. Thankfully, despite the many projects, he still drums with his »Fellowship Band«, which he established more than 25 years ago with the ideally matched jazz pianist Jon Cowherd. In the past year, with »Kings Highway«, the band has now released its seventh studio album. Here, the instruments once again blend into a perfectly harmonious sound. »Everyone adds so much and everyone takes care of the needs of the others,« explained a long-standing band member of the irresistible magic of this unique constellation.

German Brass

Sun, May 12, 2024, 17:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
German Brass
German Brass has been in existence for 50 years, which is almost an eternity for a music ensemble, as it means carefully integrating new and younger members into the ensemble time and again without losing a single ounce of musical quality. The fact that German Brass has won numerous national and international record awards is almost a side note. German Brass owes its success to its sound. As a pioneer among brass ensembles, German Brass has not only made music history since its foundation in 1974 but has also continued its success story. The ten brass players are characterised in particular by the fact that they uncompromisingly sound of their ensemble, finding and inventing it anew in every concert and every recording.

Mnozil Brass

Fri, May 9, 2025, 13:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Thomas Gansch (Trumpet), Thomas Gansch (Flugelhorn), Robert Rother (Trumpet), Robert Rother (Flugelhorn), Roman Rindberger (Trumpet), Roman Rindberger (Flugelhorn), Gerhard Füssl (Trumpet), Leonhard Paul (Trombone), Leonhard Paul (Bass trumpet), Zoltán Kiss (Tenor trombone), Zoltán Kiss (Alto trombone), Wilfried Brandstötter (F-tuba)
It has been 30 years since a couple of cheeky music students with philharmonic ambitions gave in to the temptations of pub music at the Mnozil inn in Vienna and embarked on an unplanned journey into the entertainment business. They left the noble world of classical music behind and travelled the globe on behalf of applied brass music. Success came quickly and it happened as it had to: the decades flew by and students eventually became professors themselves. Teachers who, to the best of their knowledge and belief, endeavoured to pass on what they had learned to their inquisitive students in word and sound. But the fire of blown music never goes out! It still burns brightly in their hearts in 2025, just like it did back then in the small Viennese pub. And that’s why Mnozil Brass is once again heading for new shores and presenting the ultimate brass birthday in the form of an anniversary show.
